What's your confidence level in Canales?

The head coach builds the culture--I like the positivity--lotta ups and downs during a season, and football is very mental.  Bryce fed off the positivity, I have no doubt.  We finished the last 9 games 4-5 and almost beat KC, Philly, and TB during that stretch.  You can SEE when the players started buying in.

Yeah you definitely  could.  It was the win in Germany the bye and coming back and playing the chiefs the way they did.  You could hear it in thielens interview after the chiefs game

If I'm not mistaken it's still mostly made up of the group that Fitterer assembled post Hurney in 2021.

It's been a while since I've looked over the staff list.

In all likelihood, the current staff stays at least through April. Scouting department changes tend to happen post draft.

Executives though? They're pretty much fair game at any time.

I’d like to see him improve his situational awareness.  Not abandon the run so often, but I didn’t see him making game changing blunders but rather rookie mistakes.  If he can clean those up while coaching up Bryce and the youngins, I’m cautiously optimistic going forward.

That's the kinda thing for which experience is the best teacher.

5/10 on Canales.

7/10 on Morgan.

Need to see them both with a full offseason. Don't want to hear poo next season about defense if Morgan dumps a bunch of assets into it. Evero better do something with it or I'm going to blame Canales.

My scores are reversed.  I feel like Morgan bombed on the draft.  We had some players contribute but it was because the team had no talent.  On a decent team none of these guys would have played probably.

I think he is a QB whisperer.  I think what he has done with Young in one season is nearly a miracle.  Watching Stroud do so well last year and Young struggle so much was disheartening.  Canales came in and it took all of OTA, Preseason and a benching for Young to finally get onboard with what Canales was teaching.

As Young started to get more comfortable I saw new exciting plays being called and made.  The exclamation point to me can when Young, following the designed play, executed it perfectly and threw a pass to Tremble and turned away before he even caught it.  That's confidence and I expect him to continue to get more confidence going into 2025.

Canales is a rookie head coach, and he made a lot of mistakes, especially early on but seemed to grow into the position and I like his direction and hope he continues to improve as a Head Coach and play caller.

Right now, we are competitive against most of the non-playoff teams.  We're even competitive against some of the wildcard teams.  If we can build this roster, get a solid defense, and add another weapon or two we could start beating the upper echelon teams.  We showed, even with the worst defense in NFL history, that we hang in there with good teams.

Clean up the blow-outs and this team might surprise a team or two next season.

8/10 on Canales

Canales was brought in to change the culture and make it work with BY9. As of right now it looks like he’s done that. Is there room to grow, sure, head coaches should always be getting better as the game is multifaceted.

5/10 on Morgan

Yeah he pulled Hunt and Lewis in free agency but we didn’t land any instant impact players in the draft and a lot of the depth pieces he signed were average at best. It’s too early to grade last years draft class but come next year if we don’t see any improvement from our 2024 class and we don’t land an instant impact player at 8 then it might be time to move on. Morgan needs to give Canales and his staff more to work with than he did this year.

He's made us into a competitive football team in one season. Literally what you want a new coach to do. It's not about wins until 3-5 years in. That is when you don't accept "we were a handful of plays from the wildcard".

Fix the d and improve and he succeeds next season too.

Obviously valid points on Morgan but I will wait another year or so before evaluating his moves.  I think many of his moves were based on their ceiling than their immediate contribution.  Leggett, Brooks, Wallace and Sander IMO could very well be core players after gaining some experience.  I think 2025 Leggett, Wallace and Sanders are going to take big leaps in production especially now that Young seems to have some confidence.

Just my take.

The man deserves credit.  Maybe a novice as a head coach right now but a master at mind checkers.

The mood and the morale in the building on the sidelines and in the fanbase has swung from depressing and melancholy to yippie ki yay in a few short months.  During this time period he benched the owner’s handpicked franchise qb, eradicated the locker room of Deontae then brought the benched QB back to seemingly resurrect his career.  The team fielded a historically terrible defense, and finished with over twice as many losses than wins, but lots of folks including myself would gladly watch an 18th game this coming Sunday if there was one.

Sure, he is far from a finished product as a coach, but he has made a positive impact on the team.  Even though a lot of things can change, I  think Canales keeps going in the right direction.

    • I'm probably one of those posters, but I make those posts because there are too many things going on that don't make sense. For instance, how does a RB that does something that hasn't been done in 14 years immediately get reverted back to 2nd string, and it takes a leadership council to make him the starter when he's averaging 3x the YPC? Your average fan shouldn't be screaming that for 2 weeks before the coach sees it. And that's one of many.  What you're seeing is frustration that we could be better, that we should be better, if our owner, FO, and coaches could do things that are so painfully obvious to even the most basic fan
    • Cowboys. Patriots. Couldn't ask for two bigger villains.
    • I think we're all struggling with what things are right now and what they have been. It's like getting ready to have bandages removed after a long period of injury. The healing, the new growth, they aren't going to be pretty, there's going to be some ongoing issues for a while at best and there's every chance that we're going to have to go back into the bandage situation all over again. And that sucks. But it's also a place where maybe, just maybe, the recovery is going to finally start happening. The bad days will be getting behind us.  It's not going to happen this year, but I believe from what I see that this year is showing that improvement. We focus on the QB because that's what all the pundits focus on, because it's the flashiest and most heralded position on the field. No one wants to put out a tweet about how a center is holding down their job and anchoring a line. They rarely celebrate that blocking tight end or special teams gunner. That fourth CB on the depth chart? Not a mention. And yet, those guys are the kind that we've been building here, we're building the lunch pail guys AND finding some future stars.  Is Bryce one of them? Might be a cornerstone of the team in the future as the second QB, might somehow just show out to end the season. Might flame out like many expect. But if that uncertainty is all we concentrate on, we're just going to miserably look at this team and maybe miss out on some solid green shoots that are finally beginning to poke through into the sunlight.
