Just started my armchair scouting this week with the EDGE guys.

Not very impressed with Mykel Williams, was disappointed that JT Tuimoloau seemed to decline a bit from last season, and was impressed with Jack Sawyer's motor but he reminds me of YGM with better hand-fighting. To be fair to all of them, I've got only two games each reviewed so far.

Abdul Carter is a freak.

I'm very eager to dive into the Mike Green film. Got a feeling that he's long gone by the time the Panthers get to make their second selection (whether or not they trade up) but going to hold on to hope!

I think, after Carter, I would like Green.  I also think Pearce is better than advertised right now. Green seems to be a better "all around" edge player.  Good against the run, pass, etc.   Carter, Green, Pearce--first round; Sawyer is my preference for round 2.  Love him.

I have read various perspectives, some with Sanders going mid round, but I think there will be 2 QBs going in the top 5.  With the exception of the Kenny Pickett year, most years QBs creep up boards the closer we get to April.  This is going to sound crazy, but I could see will Howard going in round 1.  How you perform on the biggest stage carries a lot of weight.  Depending on what Rodgers decides in his Oregon black hole of meditation, it is possible that only Jax and NE (picking before us) do not need a QB--five of seven teams.  How do you not take Sanders if he is sitting there? Someone will bite.  Furthermore, Jalen Milroe reminds me of Anthony Richardson who was drafted fairly early, and Quinn Ewers reminds me of Bo Nix.  All it takes is one team (see Pickett, Kenny).  Howard's stock is about to explode--I think he goes round 1--I could see a team like the Raiders, Colts, or Steelers taking Howard.  Once the chips start getting pushed to the center of the table, people will overpay.

I don't know, I don't see who's stock could realistically rise this draft.  These guys just aren't that good of prospects and the tape ain't great either.

Milroe is a bit more like a Kellen Mond for me.  Not as physically imposing as AR.  Has the dual ability, athletic traits, arm, but really no feel as a QB (okay, some similarities lol).  All the essentials like pocket awareness, anticipation throws, seeing the layers of live play, it's just not what you want as a QB.  Zone-read skills, but no consistency and hasn't really shown he can be that field general.  Lower than expected adjusted percentages, SUPER low pressure grades.  Just a toolsy-QB IMO.

Nix was way more consistent his final year than Ewers and is way more accurate with his deep balls.  In addition, Ewers does not have the agility Nix has.  Think they're quite different.  Something just hasn't clicked yet with QE.  He never found his go-to "guy" in school, really had a problem finding and staying in rhythm.  And for having so much talent around him, he just never produced what you think he should have.  Nix on the other hand was able to go bonkers with Tez, Bucky & Franklin at Oregon, also just had excellent mechanics and good velocity that could trick you to thinking his arm's more powerful than it is.

Kyle McCord could be a guy to watch.  But at highest, he could rise to R2.

I just see Ward & Sanders at the top, but I'm unsure I'd even classify them as 1sts.  Many speculated (Brugler, Sando, others) before decisions were made last year that Ward was viewed as a 4th rounder at best developmental...and that was after 2 really positive seasons at WSU.  This may not be common sentiment, but I wouldn't take Ward or Sanders over Penix or Nix.

I think the Jayden Daniels success will entice desperate teams--maybe too much of an assumption and generalization, but I am confident that Ward and Sanders go early--I would also point out that in the days of Portal, you get to see QBs in different systems--when Bo Nix was at Oregon, I had a low opinion of him from his Auburn days.  On the other hand, if a QB can demonstrate adaptability and make a transition work, scouts have more to work with--I am just waiting to see how this new generation of college players is evaluated.  (Does that make sense?)

Will say, as I've dug into things, Mike Green is absolutely legit.

There are only 3 appropriately-sized guys in this class with over a 20% PR win rate, 99 percentile PR skills:

Abdul Carter, James Pierce, & Mike Green.  All 3 of those guys are 3-4 molds, but not undersized or poor in run-d grade by any means. Will say, Pierce would not be a bad option at 8 if Graham IDL & Johnson DB are gone.  Those 3 are the top.  I find it hard to dispute.  Gillette arguably falls into this category, but his run-d isn't at their level or else he'd be viewed much higher in this class.

Then comes the appeal of Jalon Walker who's this offball/edge hybrid.  Overall, just a stud football player.

Then there's the consistent, hard-nose, above average type in Sawyer.  Nothing flashy, but he's a known commodity, seems like a dude primed to join an upper midwest team.

But the guys floating around 10% PR win rates that aren't necessarily stud run defenders, I just don't want much part of.  Mykel, Shermar, Kennard are the types that worry me.

Now, the pass rush specialists, give me those guys like JT, Princely (stud), Donavon Ez in R2-4...instantly insert them into our sub packages, PR downs and let them cook.

Some really interesting options.

Lots of 240-ish edge rushers.

That's like ILB size. The guy from Tenn do seem to make plays even at his size.

RTs are going to love this class

Orrrrr

3-4 OLB size

which if you didn’t know.  We’re keeping Evero around and sticking with the 3-4.

    • Just because all draft picks are a gamble doesn't mean you don't have a better chance at hitting on a better player the higher you're drafting. It would literally be like someone saying, I'll give you 1 or 2 free spins on a slot machine, and you say you'll take the 1 because you're not likely to win anything anyways with 1 or 2, so why bother? The Cowboys desperately wanted T-Mac, but because they were 4 picks behind us, they weren't able to get him.  If you told Cowboys fans that had they lost 2 more games last year in a lost season, that it would get them the player they wanted so badly, would they in retrospect go back and lose those games to get their guy? 95% of them would take that trade off in a heartbeat, and the others who wouldn't are the fans who would rather enjoy an extra win or two in a poo season to then set themselves up to be better for the next decade. I also think the fans who argue against this thinking, get too caught up in the "well that means you're going to be rooting against us late in the season even if we still have a shot at the playoffs." Which isn't true, it's saying if you're telling me right now we'd make the playoffs but lose in the first round, that I'd rather end up 8-9 or 9-8 and just miss the playoffs because in our opinion, the benefits that come along with that outweigh the benefit of the players getting 1 game of playoff experience.
    • In relation to tanking. I think you can count on one hand the number of people here who actually want us to lose football games. When accounting for it across the fanbase it amounts to maybe 2% of the entire Panthers fanbase. But you engage with some internet trolls and think haters are coming out of the woodwork and hey look at that it's all a conspiracy that leads to Bryce Young haters. Do you hear yourself sir? If it sounds ridiculous that's because it is. I mean at this point do you see Bryce haters in your dreams? As far as the culture of this franchise goes we seem to be doing better in that department via what we are building right now and with the people we have in place. But we also shouldn't just make assumptions just yet either. The rubber still needs to meet the road. And going back to previous seasons I think we can acknowledge although tanking obviously isn't a thing there were some times where we thought our culture was improving but really it wasn't. Yes I'm looking directly at some of those wins under Wilks. If the culture had truly changed we would not have lost to the Steelers who have been mediocre for years at home the way we did and they were starting Mitch Trubisky ffs. We did not change our culture for the better and we won games that ultimately meant nothing. It was just a brief mirage. We've done this for years now. The harsh truth of the matter is the Panthers have not had a winning season or been to the playoffs in going on 8 years but in those years they've been trying to convince themselves they aren't poo but in the process all they've done throughout most of that time period is squander better draft position and we were still the worst team in the league for our troubles. At the end of the day we should be able to just be adults and reconcile with that. And no that isn't being "pro tank" or any other boogeyman term it's simply recognizing reality.
    • He's an asset in a game manager role. But as soon as you have to ask him to go out there and try to make plays and not just take what the defense is giving him... well, Darnolding happens.
