Denver NT DJ Jones. Potential FA target

[Dan] Morgan was successful in shoring up the interior offensive line last season. This year he needs to throw money at the interior defensive line, among other spots. Most of last year’s acquisitions on defense had ties to Evero — some of whom played well, others not so much. If the Panthers go that route again, keep an eye

on Denver Broncos nose tackle D.J. Jones, who signed a three-year, $30 million deal in 2022 in Evero’s only season in Denver.

According to Pro Football Focus, Jones’ run stop rate ranked fourth among interior defensive linemen.

By comparison, the Panthers’ Shy Tuttle was 130th.

Jones, who had a sack on Josh Allen in the wild-card round, could be a nice fit between Brown and A’Shawn Robinson, though not at the price of his Broncos deal."

The Panthers can make a significant statement by adding a genuine nose tackle this season. They haven't had one throughout Evero's tenure for one reason or another. It's something fans have been clamoring for.

Shy Tuttle's manned the spot over the last two seasons. He never looked comfortable as the anchor and struggled to absorb blocks or hold his ground. That's a dangerous combination that opposing offensive lines had no trouble exploiting.

Jones' arrival would change all that. He's a stout force on the interior and immensely difficult to move off the block. He's also worked with Evero previously during their time together on the Denver Broncos. This familiarity makes him a lively candidate considering how many old players he's brought to Carolina.

I wish we would just go back to the 4-3.  3-4 is just so dependent on that NT.   It's great when you got it, but when you don't......it's just rough sledding.  Easier to deal with injuries and fixes in the 4-3

It’s true that the 3/4 is dependent on a NT.

But a 4/3 is dependent on DEs. The problem with that is the lack of true 4/3 DEs coming out of college. OLBs are so much easier find.

Thats true but I think its easier to find LB's in a 3-4 than it is to find DE's in a 4-3..

well, I can't disagree with that part of the equation.   The 3-4 OLB is much easier to go find in today's football.  But I wonder how much of that is just the reality of so many NFL teams running the 3-4 looks and thus the 3-4 OLB gets the attention.  For a while the narrative was pass pass pass and countering with the blitz schemes to stop the pass.  So many of the "good" NFL teams this year....were defined by their ability to run the ball this year.  If NFL teams were pushing the 4-3 again would we actually see more better looking 4-3 DEs? I wonder about that.

And its all about trends. This year was the year of the RB. So teams the beefed up the lines were having success.

Previously is was all about speed speed speed.

LB's used to be the most important position in football and now they are almost an after thought.

I still remember the year of Double Trouble. The league was obsessed with 3-4 fast LB's and fast DT's. We loaded up on big OL guys, FB's and we pounded the rock. This was the one year that I felt like we were in front of the curve.

Agreed you lose your NT and your defense is cooked

Sign him and draft a guy too. Whatever makes Shy Tuttle only see the field a few snaps per game.

I agree, but I have a different spin--Tuttle can free 6.5m as a post June 1 cut--I think the draft has a very nice selection of DTs in the first three rounds....

    • XL might never reach his full potential here but I think he does have a legitimate shot at becoming a pretty good #2-3. We knew when we picked him that he was raw but his athletic traits were hard to pass on.  I still remember coming here and telling 85% of huddlers to not give up on DB yet after his first couple of years here.  I just knew DB was going to special. I wouldn't put XL in that exact same category but I wouldn't write him off yet. I think our playcalling is also working against his strengths.  At the very least, we should have a servicable #3 receiver w/ speed between XL, Horn Jr, and Meetchie.
    • I think we haven't praised Morgan/tilis enough. In this thread we have some huddles best and its hard to figure out what to do with the 19th pick, if you understand that. Im also posting what "I" believe they are doing and what I feel is best. Those FA signess send a clear signal- They are going all-in to win this coming season. If you factor that in, just believe it first, it 100% changes what going on with pick 19, cause 51st pick doesn't matter as the talent level drop is petty big between the two. So 19 is the biggest difference maker on the current plan of all-in for the 2026.  Then you factor in who will be there at, (I better hold off on my other strong thought here- I think trade up is the best help too, yes using that 3rd to do so too...) DT, ILB(Allen? he didn't run), OC, QB(ooo my I don't want to rage drool my hate again about how I feel here, plus F it draft TY simp not joking)....... those 4 groups don't have the "BPA" at 19. You can add ILB Hill in there, but I feel 19 just is too high, other disagree.  Slot or TE it is......Kenyon is the only TE worth a 1st and he's the classic draft dilemma- All sort of he's a top ten lock to he's a non-blocking one trick WR that's not even worth 2nd currency. Then there's he's the clear winner from the TE group, thus increases his value more no matter the opinion.  Honestly I see the Matt Millen outcome as the current odds favorite, I think the huddle would go bonkers for weeks as result......just the truth tho, WR had the highest odds to be the clear BPA and slot is a need...plus if we are talking about Walker being a one year deal, Coker is a one year too(he may have another controll yr, I got to confirm it tho). Plus God forbid Tmac gets hurt, the drop in talent from him or Coker to Moore is fuging scary, I'd say more than the recent OT stone fellow. It goes back back to adding talent no matter what, draft now help, and where are  the weak points are in the system you want to run....
    • good for him...but bigger is realizing that we are starting to develop talent to the point that when our FA's hit the market, teams ACTUALLY want them.  hasnt been that way in a minute.
