Round 5, Pick 27 (#163) - Mitchell Evans, TE, Notre Dame

Love this pick. I believe he was considered the top or one of the top TE at one point. Injuries probably tanked his stock. He broke his foot in 2022 and tore his acl in 2023 so last season he was just coming off that injury.

ND produces a lot of great TE and it looks like at worst he may just be a blocking TE but I think we could see a lot more out of him in a few years.

He stood out in the few ND games I watched, I didn't know about his injury history though. Hopefully he can stay healthy.

foot in 2022

acl in 2023

I still love the pick, its the classic upside late TE pick.

ND knows how to make NFL ready TEs.

He can block which has become rare for college TEs.

Injuries are part of it.  When I was a freshman, one of the first thing I noticed int he locker room and training room was EVERYONE seemed to have a surgical scar or two.  I didn't.  By the following year, I had a scar from shoulder surgery.  It is not that you are injury prone, it is more about how recovery prone you are.

    • I encourage you to go back and watch his college play. Notice how he immediately backpedals to 10 yards behind the LOS on almost every snap. You can't do that in the NFL. Your OTs have no chance of keeping those freak show edge rushers off of you. You can't create a pocket that deep. Bryce can chuck it when he has an airport runway in front of him to step up into. There's a reason why "ease of creating velocity" is such a talking point evaluating QBs. It's not how hard or how far you can throw the ball given a perfect situation. It's how hard and how far you can throw the ball in a typical NFL game situation and that's where a lot of my concerns with Bryce were going into the draft. There were way too many plays in his college tape that if you were watching that purely in terms of translating it to the NFL it just didn't work.
    • Yeah, like I said I get it. From a revenue perspective I'm not a good customer for them. They've probably intentionally tanked offline franchise mode to try to get people online. Again, not a terrible strategy from a pure business perspective. I can't really be mad at them for doing what's good for business but yeah, from my perspective it still sucks.
    • Ok let me be more specific. Smith was a stud before Newton got here do you not agree? Yes, LaFell improved under Cam but then had his best years after leaving the Panthers with Cam as the QB and going to NE. So he improved playing with someone else. Olsen was in Chicage the year before Cam arrived and statistically had the same numbers his first year with Cam.  Hope that's clearer for you.
