Panthers sign Hunter Renfrow

Panthers signed WR Hunter Renfrow.
The 2019 fifth-rounder spent five seasons with the Raiders before spending last year in semi-retirement. He produced a career-best season in 2021, catching 103-of-124 targets for 1,038 yards and nine touchdowns. Renfrow has 1,881 slot snaps and 709 perimeter snaps to his name, though he curiously performs more efficiently, on a per-route basis, when lined up as a perimeter receiver. If he has anything left in the tank, the 29-year-old Renfrow may be able to compete for the team’s No. 4 wide receiver role. He is unlikely to perform as a reliable flex option, though.

I'm not sure he makes the roster, TBH. He's a name at this point, but I'm not sure what he brings to the table that we don't already have with Adam Thielen. I suspect we keep 6 WRs this year:

LOCKS:
T-Mac
XL
Thielen
Coker

LIKELY:
Horn Jr. (as a return specialist if nothing else)

That only really leaves one open WR spot between Renfrow, Moore, Jacolby George, Kobe Hudson and Moose III.

Ah yes, that Gamecock defense was elite...

I mean, I was not so subtly just trying to just get a shot in at the Gamecocks.

but if you want it vs mighty Bama in National Title games…

7 rec, 88 yard, 2 TDs.

10 rec, 92 yards, 2 TDs.

Bama had no answer for him either.

The final spot has to be between Renfrow and Moore and pending how he looks after the year off, I might lean Renfrow.

We now have our offense of the future in place if they pan out, this season has one main goal and it's expediting the growth of this very young group of skill position players.

Chuba, Rico, and Tremble have each played 4 seasons (all the others are 2 or less) and are the most experienced skill position players on the team other than Dalton, Thielen, Moore, and now Renfrow.  With Moore and Renfrow then being cut at the expense of one of those UDFA's if we kept one.

Having Dalton and Thielen as the only two skill position players on the active roster with more than 4 years of experience, and only 3 others with more than 2, doesn't seem smart.

We don't need more lottery tickets, coaches can only do/teach so much, we need vets for these guys to learn from so we get the best out of them and have our offense for hopefully the next 5-8 years in place pending being able to afford them all.

nothing against him, but i hope he doesn't make the team unless he blows the doors off everyone.

i just don't like the idea of us being in such shape that we let a guy who took a year off last year get a roster spot. i'm sure he had good reasons, but i'm more interested in seeing the younger guys get a shot or David Moore since he proved himself last year with us.

I don’t get it. He doesn’t threaten a defense at this point. He just takes what they want to give him. Maybe we’re playing 4D chess with Tepper’s money and are bringing him in to show the young guys what’s possible with great footwork? Trying him out as a coach-in-waiting? Otherwise…meh.

I mean, he is a slot technician.  That's what he does.  So, in a good offense, you would be trotting him out there on 3rd downs and situationally.....to not take what they give him but to move chains.  It's a niche.

AT hasn't threatened defenses in years.

Last time we saw Renfrow on the field he averaged..... 6 yards YAC per catch.

Adam Thielen last year averaged....2 yards in YAC per catch last year.

I still contend in reality, AT isn't a slot WR.  Not in reality.  He is an aging rec TE.  And those aren't the same thing.  AT simply can't generate quick separation or provide YAC.

I don't see any harm in it. I just don't get the whole replace Thielen thing.

he averaged 2 yards in YAC per reception last year.  He can't generate quick separation.  He was debating retirement last year.    Yet we champion him as some great option.

AT is a savvy vet we force feed the ball too......on a team starved for basic offense the last couple seasons.  We overrated AT.  Which is why some freak when people like JT on his podcast point out the painfully obvious about him.

Exactly what I'm thinking, but might keep 7 on final cuts, then place one on PS to get down to 6 active

    • Well bois, we gave the Devils their due! Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery... The jersey boys have been trying to jack our steeze for a few years now. They've followed our blueprints and studied our tape. Every offseason, they pounce on our sloppy seconds in a Newark minute. Quick with the puck, ferocious on the forecheck and stifling team defense. Down to the colors, this is this closest we'll come to having to play ourselves in Ole Stanley's Hockey Hoedown. As the postseason began, Rod stood flexing in the gym mirror and saw this guy staring back from the void... (Shutters) When beating us at our game didn't work, Timo and the Tri-State Trash tried to tango instead. Outside of a bitchass cheapshot on Freddie, that poo didn't work either. Their goon squad was getting wrecked by our bantam weights. As much as we all wanted to see Svechy or Staal Bunyan literally break someone in half after the Great Dane went down, they didnt need to. Our munchkins were monsters! Jarvis obliterating giants at the blue line, Logan laying the Stank on dudes twice his size and Blakers blasting Timo into next season. It was beautiful to see! (Side note: Does JBlo wear lead weights under his pads? 170lbs shouldn't be able to hit that hard!) We closed it out in 5, for the gentleman's sweep. Only team in the league to win a series in each of the past 7(?) seasons! And, this was supposed to be a rebuilding year... Onto the awards: Key To The Series : 6 for 19 - .316% IT FINALLY WORKED!!! MVP : 16/180 g/s - .911 save% - 2.53 gaa Seriously, without this dude, we would've won in 3! (Trust me bro) 3rd Star : 6/94 g/s - .936 save % - 1.59 gaa The Great Dane   2nd Star : 3 g - 5 a - +1 - 20:38 toi/g - 18 hits - 3 bs - 58.1% fo 3 PP goals and the 2OT series winning goal! WOOAAAHHH NELLY!!!!   And, your 1st Star of the series : 5 g - 1 a - +3 - 16:48 toi/g - 16 hits - 1 bs - 1 tk - 50% fo Zero, I repeat, zero penalty minutes for the series! MISSSTAAAHHH SVEEECHNIKOOOV!!!!!! Onto The Next: Now, we wait for the Habs to make it a nasty 7 game slog, while we recuperate. And, hopefully, get Nikishin, and some of the other black aces some real peactice time. We are gonna need those guys at some point. Because, if you think the Devils were dirty, hoooo boy, wait till you see what's next...
