Watch them overpay for a 30 year old DE. They trade Burns and only get a 2nd because they did not want to pay him $30m per year…:and now only 12-months later , they are exploring the possibility of paying a 30+ year old DE this much plus give away draft picks. Sounds like a Tepper Panthers move.

They legitimately tried for DK. They offered their 3rd but didn’t want to part with their 2nd

I think that’s how this Trey deal plays out too. Are we willing to part with our 2nd this time to close the deal? Who knows

I seriously doubt the Bengals get a 1st. Don’t really see teams trading 1’s like that anymore for these guys at 30 looking for new deals

The Bengals trading him all but secured their 4th place finish in the AFC North.

I would be shocked if they took trash and scraps for him. They've already said at some point he is just going to have to be happy with that they offer up.

His asking price is not 20 million or that ballpark per year either. That kind of gets to the heart of the matter anyway. Bengals have been trying to sign him to a prove-it kind of deal, short term, lower money but a slight bump from his salary now, and he feels, rightfully, that he has proven it already.

Jared Allen was closing out his career and was coming off of a season prior with 5.5 sacks. Guy didn’t have much if anything left in the tank

Trey has had 17.5 in each of the last two seasons

Point being we were a player or two away in 2015 and that ended up in a SB run.  That staff knew it.  This staff is throwing mud at the wall to see if anything sticks just to save face.  Another crappy season and things could get really ugly in the front office, potentially with the coaching staff as well.  Besting last year's win total by a game or two isn't going to cut it.  No amount of spin can gloss over another losing season.

That drop off is coming though. He's 31 in a few months. Even someone like Aaron Donald who is now 34 you look at his last two seasons at 31 and 32 years old. 5 sacks and 8 sacks after averaging 13 for 3 consecutive seasons and one 20 sack season before that previously. Father time awaits us all.

We basically have an entire roster to build still.  Dumping money into him makes that harder.

but we have very bad people at the top in Carolina….so you never know.

I maintain vision and planning isn’t what we do well at all.  We are the random parts franchise.  So we could very well do something dumb in the name of losers being desperate to shake the streak

Mays is valuable to us. He is of very limited value elsewhere.

Not sure I would call including him as "stupid."

For us it's stupid. He's cheapish right now and we have not drafted a center in years. We had the chance but took an injured RB. It would be stupid to make what is already looking shaky but not terrible a terrible situation and then back ourselves into a situation of being desperate for a center next year and probably drafting a bust. I mean it's just how this team operates unfortunately.
