I don't think Canales was doing Evero a solid.  The Carolina front office wouldn't let Evero go.   Which was always weird.   Someone at BOA hasn't been letting head coaches be in total power.  Frank wasn't.  Canales doesn't appear to be

Maybe they didn't want to pay out his contract but that wouldn't tie with how trigger happy Tepper has been, he doesn't seem to have an issue wasting money on the org. I wish Canales brought in his guy if he had one in mind.

I think Head Coaches here have plenty of power or say, my guess is Canales stays out of the defensive side of business running the team (I think he's mentioned this in the past). But I think that rope is reaching it's end and he's going to have to put his big boy HC pants on and tell his DC what to do every once in a while.

Frank clearly wasn't allowed to staff his team as he wanted.

Canales clearly wasn't either either.

Post Rhule, someone is dictating what the HCs can and can't do w/ their staff it appears.  And yeah, an O coach isn't hands on with a D.  But it doesn't mean they wouldn't want like minded people they wanted and worked well with on board.

I mean... maybe we need to player more older guys on offense since the defense somehow looked better than the offense yesterday...

In short, sounds like a "you suck more, no you suck more" type of rift might form between these 2 as they both battle to stay employed

How do you think a defense which gave up 200 yards on the ground and 138 of those by halftime is doing better than the offense. It was over 6 yards a carry for Jacksonville even when we knew they were going to run.  Both were dreadful. We were on pace to give up almost 500 yards which got reduced to 378 when Jacksonville focused on running out the clock instead of scoring more points. Do you know how many 3 and outs we caused all game. I drive at the beginning of the second half. Pitiful.  Our offense had two 3 and outs which is not that unusual but surely nothing to write home about. No the defense is starting out exactly where it ended last year- historically bad.

mike kaye has said all along EE doesnt like playing young guys

Dave Canales: I’d love to see our young players on the field on defense, I’m pushing that

“I’m pushing that,” Canales said. “I’d love for all of our young guys to play. I really believe that it’s so valuable for those guys to be out there. Are they going to be perfect? No. Will every rep that they take be valuable and beneficial for their future? Yes. And so I would love for those guys to get opportunities out there so that we can see what we have. And then also just knowing it’s a long season and a lot of people are going to play at different times, it’ll help us going forward.”

Asked if he’s pushed for more playing time for young guys in a conversation with defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, Canales said he talks about it with his coaching staff.

“Just collectively, as a staff, it’s just like, ‘Hey guys, let’s play these young guys. We’re gonna need everybody,’” Canales said.

The reality, however, is that Canales is the head coach. He decides who plays. He doesn’t have to “push” anything, he can just send the young players on the field. The Panthers turned in an ugly performance in Sunday’s opener, and if Canales wasn’t satisfied with who was on the field, he should have changed that during the game.

I don’t really know what happens if we fire Evero though. The defense is full of his guys. I wonder if it would be a mass exodus like 2022 when Snow left. I know they were grooming Cooley as a play caller in the pre-season but I wonder if Todd Wash wouldn’t be a better option, or would Dom Capers take over?

Dom should take over for the rest of the year then let Canales pick his guy.

Wallace single handedly tanked the defense yesterday. When one guy is that out of position, it wrecks the whole defense. Carolina's defense wasn't actually that bad otherwise, the secondary played well. It was the worst performance I've ever seen and his PFF grade backs it up. He cannot play next week, or it will be much of the same. If they trot him out there again, it shows they have no fuging clue what they are doing. If he is on the field Cardinals first series, place all your money on the Cardinals

This will be a very interesting dynamic to keep an eye on. Canales has been more than generous keeping Evero from the previous regime and also keeping him after a historically bad defense last season. Evero is not really Canales guy, nor GM Dan Morgans. He will certainly be handed a pink slip if things don't change this season and it might be before Thanksgiving.

He's out of contract and doesn't want to be here anyway.

His historically bad defence had historically bad talent on it by the way.
