I'd take a swing on Tray Lance in a competition scenario.  

Tyson Bagent is the only real player I can think of that I would consider wanting to trade for. He's been in the league 3 or 4 years now, the Bears thought highly enough of him to keep him and sign him to a $10 million extension as a back-up. Clearly he has developed, and he looked really, really good in the preseason. Not just in his numbers but his ball placement, pocket movement, decision making, and execution of the offense. 

It will never happen, but that's who I would explore if we don't get a shot at Drew Allar or Carson Beck in the draft.

The team fell for that late season averageness he displayed last year and got burned. You want to do that again? I don’t. 
But I sort of do agree that we are stuck with him as the starter. 

I can’t decide whether replacing him gets us into the playoffs so suffering through one last season is the price for freedom in 2026. 
Three ways to be free in 2026:


He actually plays like a real NFL QB, 

The team sends him packing.

Be completely out on tne Panthers until changes are made.

Bakers are hard to come by. Darnolds should still come with a rookie in that big picture. We got a Baker when we had a Darnold but it was year 3 of Rhule that should never have happened given the first 2 years.

Sam has played 2 good teams and is 0-2 and his numbers continue to drop...Just like his year before Baker with us. That's not the answer but part of an answer.

The thing about top drafted QBs is when a guy looks like a sure thing, the teams aren’t letting go of the pick.

So it is luck of the draw if you do or do not get that lined up. 
The only time it makes sense to draft a guy is if you are really positive about him not because you are under duress due to a dire need.

That’s like being at the bar at closing time and you haven’t hooked up - you might settle for something you want to chew your arm off the get away from in the morning.

You guys are iffy on Beck because he's playing on time, within the framework of the offense. He isn't making the off-schedule plays when the receivers aren't there but when the receivers are on their P's and Q's, Beck can deliver it anywhere, on time, and in phase.

You also have to realize that Beck has led Miami to wins over Notre Dame, a ranked USF, a likely Top 20 team in Florida, and now Florida State. He's already led Miami to more marquee wins than Ward had all of last season.

I watch a ton of college football. If Beck has the mentality to be great, and will put in the work to be great, he has a chance to be really, really good. Reminds me a lot of Jared Goff honestly, or a Joe Burrow type as a thrower of the ball. 

Agree to disagree I guess.

The Defence was awful last season - Ward put up a bazillion points every game. The D just gave up a bazillion and one at times.

You're realistically going to have to trade for one of the better backups in the league - or spunk your first overall on a massive gamble / pay a terrible 30+ year old to start. 

Lance is a FA after the season, so unless the Chargers lock him up before FA, then he's going to the highest bidder or where he has a chance to start.  Neither of those are with the Chargers.  BTW, he's only 24-years old.  Only a year older than Will Howard and Shedeur Sanders that just came out this draft.  He's also 3-years younger than Hendon Hooker who only has been in the League a couple of years. He's setting the Chargers back a mere $2M.  

Dude is athletic and got a cannon, but has to be more accurate while protecting the ball. I haven't seen him play in a few years, but judging by Mayfield and Darnold, some QBs need to bounce around the League a little while before finding their home.  He was S-U-P-E-R raw coming out of college.  he needed to stay another year, likely two before he came out in the draft.   

This is is the very player I point to when people pining over LaNorris Sellers to declare this year, Lance and Anthony Richardson.  You can get by on shear athletic prowess in college football, but that crap doesn't cut it in the NFL. Players are just as big, strong and fast, so without the knowledge and fundamentals you will get exposed in the League.  Lance found that out the hard way.

      Nobody is saying we don't need it, just that we have bigger needs elsewhere, and that type of WR is actually something that is often found in the mid rounds, you just have to scout and evaluate properly. Here's another way of looking at why WR in the 1st shouldn't even be considered an option. Looking only at players currently on the team, what position group would you feel strongest about 4 years from now? I'm not sure there is a better answer there than WR, as you have to think T-Mac is our best player on the team in 4 years (Brown is the only current player I think there is even an argument to be made over T-Mac there), with Coker not far behind. Our OL is too old to be considered, my opinions on Bryce is well known, Hubbard will be done by then and the rest of the RB is an unknown, Off-ball LB is maybe our biggest need, we only have 1 legit safety, it's certainly not TE, and our 2nd best CB right now will be 33 by then.   Brown should still be a beast as he'll only be 31, but nobody else on the DL projects to be that good in 4 years.  Edge rusher with Phillips, Scourton, and Princely is probably the only other possible answer than WR. So yes, that fast/shifty type of WR is 100% a need of ours, but we have so many other bigger needs both in the immediate and future, that to me, taking a WR in the 1st for the 3rd year in a row and having hit on another WR in the same time frame, just makes zero sense both currently and looking into the future.

      Laughing at Slayton (Mooney or Calvin Austin III), but telling me that Coker is the next best thing since sliced bread...You laughing at Theo Johnson in reference to our guys too? LOL No one in their right mind thinks Nabers is anything but a stud (definitely top 10 if not 5 potential). You do realize that Thomas was in a new system with a furst-time coach last year (with a questionable QB to boot)? And yet still, it's possible that he eclipses even T-mac (not saying that he will). They didn't even mention Travis Hunter. In any event, we're not in the top half. Draft another legit receiver, and we will be.
