Most of Hurney's picks weren't actually top-ten.

Top-ten picks

  • Julius Peppers (2nd, 2002)
  • Jordan Gross (8th, 2003)
  • Cam Newton (1st, 2011)
  • Luke Kuechly (9th, 2012)
  • Christian McCaffrey (8th, 2016)
  • Derrick Brown (7th, 2020)

Not top-ten picks

  • Chris Gamble (31st, 2004)
  • Thomas Davis (14th, 2005)
  • DeAngelo Williams (27th, 2006)
  • Jon Beason (25th, 2007)
  • Jonathan Stewart (13th, 2008)
  • Jeff Otah (19th, 2008)
  • DJ Moore (24th, 2018)
  • Brian Burns (16th, 2019)

It's really, really hard to find a franchise with such sustained first-round excellence though. Gettleman and especially Fitterer were absolutely terrible in the 1st

As great as he was in the first, he was dogshit in 2-7 and one of the worst at signing players. He was even awful at signing Panthers players to new deals.

Still he showed just hitting that 1st and once every few years another pick in 2-7(kalil, CJ, Norman, etc). You can field a 7-9 team that's able to make it to the SB with the right timing and luck.

Herniay rode the greatest class in Panthers history for 10+ years with the Morgan, Jenkins, Smitty and Cooper was a ACe STer.

Everyone called Ravens Gm Ozzie New the best, he had years were his classes were worse than hernaiy/Panthers.

The dark secret is this- On average your team gets almost 8 picks (comp) each year. In order for good/great success all that is needed is two of picks to be starters on a rosters that is winning. Then you need either one top backup/swing/dime or a 4 phrase ST main stay. That's all 2.5 "hits" and the bonus is each year finding 1-2 UDFAs for cap space/roster reasons.

Fitz, forgive my mind and I have soup brain form moving/no sleep. I seem to recall you and most of the huddle hating on dbrown for the first 1.5 seasons(2.5?).

I got to get me a CPAP machine, but my doctor told me to stop being cheap and get the test first cause theres different levels and lots of other stuff rather than just picking a machine.

End of second season I made a thread about him. He really started coming around second half of his second year

also you have to have the inpatient sleep study to properly titrate your cpap anyway.

Gettleman drafted McCaffrey. But yeah, Hurney was pretty good at doing the easiest part of a GM job

Im seeing just under 180 a game on average last year. We opened at 200 and Miami could only pass, not sure that was an achievement by the Panthers or Miami falling apart.

It's week 6 so the opening year stuff should fall away and the averages should emerge for thr year. The schedule this year is also ridiculously easy up front vs the back side. We will see how much they have improved at the end.

I'm going by the eyeball test. Outside of the Jacksonville game (which wouldn't have been the worst if Etienne didn't have that 70-yard run), we have done a good job of limiting first down runs to three yards or less a lot this season. The falcons game rushing stats look worse than it truly was - I think the falcons got about 60 rushing yards in garbage time when they were down 30. Otherwise, it has mostly been something around 25 carries for the other team for ~100 yards.

Last season, it felt like every first down run was going for at least 6 yards.

Hurney really relied on his scouts I think. Video wasn’t just pick up your phone or iPad and have it all right there.

He lost me with the trade up I think it was Everette Brown which didn’t impress me but the killer was he gave a future 1st.

I frown on that shut.

Don't forget trading our future 2nd, the 33rd overall for THE Armanti Edwards.

Hurney was also a major reason for the 2001 draft class as well. Still the teams best GM... Though yea that's not saying a whole lot

Yeah that was something. In my youth a QB that couldn’t make it as a QB in the NFL and was going to try WR went a bit later.
Now that you mention him though what would he look like at QB of the Panthers today? Makes me think.

Defending him must be a nightmare. They need to plant their feet so he doesn't just bull rush them. When they do plant their feet,  he will just go around them. Even double teams don't work.

Ehh, teams earlier this season double and tripled teamed him with decent success. The reason he beasted out so much with Miami was for some reason they did not much at all. Bad call on their part.

But that is his purpose. If he is eating up people that is huge, and theoretically should give others the ability to make a play. But his surrounding cast to do that isn’t great.

Brown is something OCs have to put a lot of time to plan for.
