Week 6 PFF grades vs. DAL

We had discussions about sustainability after the shutout win against the Falcons and we know how the following matchup went.

We need to see this team and more specifically Bryce Young on the road before making any determinations.

Wallace + Rozeboom the top-2 grades!? They were both playing incredibly well and the defense is going to need more of that going forward.

We can't say that the MLB position isn't important anymore. We've been spoiled with great linebacking play over the years so we just expect it not to be a problem. Now we see what it's like when the linebackers are a weakness, we still need to address the position this off season.

PFF also is just a bunch of randos bullshitting up stuff with their own biases all over their "grading".

any grading system that thinks Rico had the 10th best day on offense.....needs to spend some time in front of a mirror and ask themselves why they are so silly.  There grades continue to often make zero sense.  Especially, how they are then used by the masses and wielded.

and I think Carolina PFF folks are also now self aware of how they are critiqued on Bryce Young at this point given their "check this out"!!! about Bryce facts/highlights.

I don't believe it's as easy as saying that anyone believes that Rico had the 10th best day on offense. Grades are done in a vacuum inasmuch as they can be. By their very nature, skill positions are always going to account for more "production" in reference to stats, and RBs perhaps even more than WRs because they touch the ball more. You can't look at PFF's grading system, or any football grading/grading system (like perhaps Football Outsiders or Next Gen Stats), so simplistically. If a player has an excellent day, relative to his position, relative to his assignments, and relative to his number of snaps, then he should be graded highly. It's up to the reader (or the analyst, if you will) to put what you're seeing into context, and that's not only in relation to the grades, but the general situation (like whether a player is playing injured, who they're playing with or against---the general situation). Even the fact that (presumably) PFF or news outlets put out a list of the highest and lowest grades, that doesn't mean that said players were the most impactful of the day, it just means that they did or didn't do their job the best, based upon a certain set of parameters.

PFF is a part of life for football analysts, talking heads, execs, coaches, players, and even fans (even if indirectly), all to varying degrees. It is a tool that is used by all 32 teams. Obviously it's not viewed so dismissively by franchises as a whole. Execs obviously don't look at it as a bunch of bozos making sh¡t up on the fly. Fans can berate it or swear by it, but it isn't going anywhere.

The only thing that I can tell you is that perspective and context matters.

I really don’t understand the turnaround of Wallace and Rozeboom after they swapped roles.

Like can Rozeboom just not think and just hits stuff or is Wallace just damn good at calling defenses.

The signal caller has about 5-10 seconds to recognize the offense and call the defense.  I can't imagine its easy.

PFF feeds the beast.  So it’s largely popular for that IMO and is embraced by the NFL machine because it helps feed the beast.  Thats why you see the cute stats pop on the Monday Night football screen lol.  Hot takes? Fantasy football? Yeah, it’s good for the NFL machine for lots of reason.  I do think the league embraces them.  Not because they are actually good at doing what they claim.

actual analytics folks are critical of PFF.  Because it’s not analytics.  It’s subjective goobly goo ratings by dudes that aren’t really qualified nor even have the info to do real grading.

you got legit NFL players who say they have literally put PFF grades by the coaches grades and they are worlds apart.  Players have laughed at them pretending they can grade certain plays without the underlining info.  NFL coaches have called out there bologna at pressers.

could it be a quick tool to find out some info that has nothing to with their subjective grades? Sure.  There is a lot of data on 32 teams for cheap. But I do not buy the narrative 32 NFL teams think their grades are worth a poo or remotely accurate or meaningful.  All the OGs, founders, etc left, it’s largely clickbait.

Damn someone told me Bryce got carried.

That was last week it was the guys from ESPN radio - the team with Chris Rae I think and the bearded dude with little head hair. I don’t follow them I just saw it on YouTube
Their postgame said the press box and everyone on the stadium (lol) had him fired. And the rest of his teammates “saved his job”. That is what they said, you can probably find it.
I am quoting 8 days later I may not be perfect word for word  but that is the essence of their message
I didn’t hear anything like that this week.

He is in the 80s for his rushing grade which is a great score. Its the other aspects of his game that dropped him so far, predominantly his pass blocking.

A score in the 80s vs 90s is basically "good to great" vs "elite." I would argue that low 80s is lower than Rico deserves as i have trouble characterizing his rushing as less than elite yesterday.

And still the idea that his overall score on the day was just "above average" is fuging insane and represents a problem with their scoring.

Well you can start with the 80 rushing grade being really suspect lol.

I only recall 2 really bad pass blocking reps and one of them he was screwed trying to take on 2 guys untouched.  And it was clear Rico saw the issue coming presnap (his eyes going crazy) and Young wasn’t in tune with what was coming.  Still don’t see how that drops Rico to the 10th best O grade.

Imo it isn't just that he was 10th best. It was that he was basically only average / above average overall at 67.

His rushing was elite that game. Yes he had holes but he also had tons of yards after contact.
