Adam Thielen Requests and is Granted Release

The Carolina Panthers traded veteran Adam Thielen back to the Minnesota Vikings in the offseason. There was some early speculation about how that would go, as Carolina was trusting a very young wide receiver corps and moving on from their most reliable and productive offensive target. 

Quickly, it looked like, at the very least, the Panthers got something for nothing. Thielen had no impact on the Vikings, and while the passing offense could've used Thielen at times early on, the Panthers have adapted and honestly thrived without him. 

After Week 13, in which Bryce Young connected with Jalen Coker and Tetairoa McMillan for scores in a big win over the Los Angeles Rams, and the Vikings got nothing on offense again from Thielen (or anyone), they waived him. 

The statement indicates that Thielen requested this, saying he wants to spend what could be the final weeks of his NFL career contending and playing on a team that can win. It sure sounds like a reunion would make sense for both sides. 

The Panthers don't need Thielen, but he probably needs them. Other contenders, like the Buffalo Bills or New England Patriots, could use him more, but he runs the risk of failing to grasp everything in time for it to matter. 

While the Panthers have changed their offense from last year and from training camp to now, it's still much closer to what Thielen knew early on. Re-learning this offense would be much less of a challenge for Thielen in the five remaining weeks. 

Plus, with a bye week coming up, Thielen would have two weeks to prepare. He did really excellent work with Bryce Young, who he clearly has chemistry with. Why not run it back as the Panthers improbably contend for a division crown?

Thielen was mostly a volume contributor in Carolina. There was no one else reliable, so he got most of the targets and most of the catches. But even in a reduced role, it is highly likely he'd do better as WR3/WR4 in Carolina than WR3 in Minnesota. 

Thielen and the Panthers proved to be a perfect match one time. They could be again, and it would be hilarious to get Thielen and the pick they acquired for him in one season.

Here's the full details of the trade:

  • Panthers received: 2026 5th-round pick, 2027 4th-round pick
  • Vikings received: conditional 2026 7th-round pick, 2027 5th-round pick

So, the Panthers flipped their seventh-round pick in next year's draft into a fifth-rounder and turned a 2027 fifth-round pick into a fourth-rounder.

All that for a guy who played 185 snaps over 11 games and caught just eight balls for the Vikings.

Rare Panthers "W" right there.

Carolina could do something absolutely hilarious and claim Thielen off waivers, which would really make this trade look even worse for Minnesota.

Granted, the Panthers certainly don't need Thielen and he likely wouldn't have a role much bigger than the one he had with the Vikings, but having the extra depth would not hurt Carolina's playoff push one bit.

So Dan Morgan knows what he is doing?!?! Some huddlers need to lay off of him. I think Dan has done a great job of adding talent and winning trades compared to previous regimes. Dan fixed the Oline year 1, fixed the Dline year 2, added contributors in Mike Jackson for pennies, drafted fairly well. He's not going to hit on every player/pick, but he has contributed to the teams success instead of hurt the team like Fitterer.

      I have not seen a good fit yet as a HC hire. Honestly, Saleh is probably the best one and that’s not saying much. Miami- Hired a DC with an average defense. Check the rest of his resume. It also doesn’t solve your main problem at QB with Tua/Ewers, etc. Clear downgrade from Mike McDaniel. The owner obviously thought he had a shot at Harbaugh and fired McDaniel to throw his hat in, Waller has an interview that gives the impression of this. Atlanta- Stefanski has won like 6 games in 2 years. Carried a few years ago by his defense. Defense has gotten older and he got exposed. Brought into Atlanta with a DC he didn’t hire. No idea what they are going to do at QB, no 1st round pick, a lot of resigning. Oh and their Dan Morgan/John Lynch/ John Elway guy is Matt Ryan who has not worked in the front office at all. At least Dan was a scout, director, asst GM, etc. New York-Not bad really but he’s only going to be as good as his OC. Joe Schoen is still the guy getting your talent, and good luck playing Dak Prescott, The Eagles D, and Jayden Daniels 6 times per year with the NY media writing about everything you’ve done wrong. Tennessee- meh. Probably should have gotten an OC to develop Ward but Saleh can at least make this team aggressive and physical again. I doubt many wanted the job. If Saleh fixes the culture and gets a decent play caller he will be okay. The GM there seems promising. If I had to rank the rest of the openings I’d say: 1-Pittsburgh: Enough talent to be competitive. Have some things to fix at key positions but long history of success and winning is in that building. Plus, you get Baltimore and Cleveland twice per year (I’ll get to that). 2-Baltimore: What in the ever living hell makes you think it’s time to walk away from Harbaugh. He didn’t leave like Tomlin, you fired him then the owner joked about it at the press conference. Who did you ever think you were going to get better than him. Somebody to support Lamar? Like drive him to the practices he never attends? 3-Buffalo I mean you get Josh Allen but they promoted Beane to be their Morgan and if you watched the Press Conference today the owner made Tepper look like Arthur Blank. Basically said he fired McDermott just over losing to the Broncos. Beane got up there and poo on a few players. The two leading candidates are Joe Brady, your current OC and Brian Daboll, your former OC who just got done running a circus on the other side of the state. Like the Ravens, who did you think you would get that was better? 4-Las Vegas Spytek seems competent as a GM and Brady is in the building but there is a real stink culture built into that organization that somebody is going to eventually have to fix. It seems like everyone that gets close (Gruden, Carroll, Pierce) gets fired. At least you have a shot with a potential Franchise QB in Mendoza. 5-Arizona Gannon just collapsed. Don’t know what happened, but it seems like Kyler is gone with no real plan in place. Maybe resign Brissett? Maybe take another down year and just rebuild the roster? Who really knows. I don’t see them having any shot landing a big fish, I honestly forget they don’t have a HC half the time. 6-Cleveland There’s a reason McCarthy and McDaniel turned them down. Still have Watson on the books. Have to deal with the Shaduer fans and haters. Aging defense. Don’t imagine Schwartz will stay on as DC if he is turned down, so there that goes. Honestly, I think Schwartz by the only guy that wants the job.
