What teams don't pay the suckage tax?  I feel like everyone "overpays" for everyone.  Do you think Brown and Horn would have gotten less in the open market?

Yeah I'm not sure why fans think this is a thing.   Both players would have made the same if not more due to a bidding war in FA.  Milton WIlliams just made bank in FA with NE.  Parsons just made the highest ever for a non QB with GB who is always a good team.

If you look at Brown and Horn's contracts, expect to pay above what he is likely actually worth. This is the Panthers suckage tax.

Ultimately, much like Derrick Brown, he has steadily improved over time and that's what you want out of your young first round draft picks.

He was one of the biggest and most important question marks coming into the season and he has answered it conclusively. He is "the guy" at LT.

Great news, one less position of extreme importance to have to attempt to remedy.

It’s really not an overpay, if he hits the FA market he will get more and as always, it will look like a deal in 2 seasons. Look at Brian Burns, his contract looks fine now and he’s top 3 in the league in sacks. Some people acted like our team would never financially recover if we gave him that contract and now it looks like a bargain. Meanwhile we used that money on free agents on the line who really haven’t paid off for us and wish we had someone with 13 sacks. You never let home Horne proven talent walk unless it’s absolutely necessary and LT is never a position that you play around with.

Yeah this kind of discussion really seems to be from people that dont understand the business of football.

There is never a negotiation that is "well you're the 3rd best LT / DE / QB in football so we will only pay you the 3rd most"

Remember JC Horn, he was the highest paid CB in football for like 5 minutes, now he's is like #5. This offseason he will be #15. No point stressing about this.

Im always amazed at these conversations still in 2025.

The math is always simple.

Mid 20's player + top 15 in their position = new record setting contract

Its literally that simple.

I think Icky was shown steady improvement and really should be entering the prime years of his career that position. He's a first round draft choice that panned out and I think he needs to be resigned.

That said, your above formula is correct, but concerning. Icky is Good player and could potentially become great. But, should a 4 year starter at LT that has never been selected for an 1st or 2nd All-Pro team or been selected to a Pro Bowl become receive a new record setting contract and become the highest paid LT in football? We may have to do as you suggested in your post.

If he does get that deal, then the financial situation at QB becomes even more concerning. If Young and his agent insist on a contract in line the "QB Market" and you want to retain him you either have to hope he takes a hometown discount (i.e. below market value contract) or have a guy in the wings to replace him when he decides to hit the open market. We still have crucial holes to fill at EDGE, LB, S.

It's fun to pretend to be a GM, but in real life we can only imagine how stressful that job really is.

Pretty easy decision to pay him despite how everyone will complain about it. He's answered the call and then some this season. Not the greatest LT you'll ever see but we ain't venturing out into the LT wilderness again on purpose.

The Burns contract is this exact situation. His age and position required top of the market contract. Yet we all knew he was not playing to that. So we let him go and het got that elsewhere. But now as the GM you need to fill that void... and you better not fug it up.

BY will be the same situation on repeat... There is no option for a middle tier QB contract. Walk or sign for big money.. but keep in mind, We all said Darnold sucked. We all said Baker sucked.

What are you going to do...

I think you gotta at least run out the clock on Bryce.  Pick up the option if you want more time.  I wouldn't extend him unless we win the Super Bowl lol.

I see the logic in that. I would also be ok with not extending him and make next year a prove it year. If he 'proves it' then he gets paid a year earlier.

That said, BY and his agent might not play on the last year of their deal.. but I dont think BY has that leverage.
