Absolutely. He just turned 27 a few days ago, so quite young. He and Moehrig would be quite the pairing.

I know we say this every year, but this FA period has A LOT of talent that will be switching uniforms. We were aggressive last year and have no doubt this time next week will have some studs on defense.

While I'm not opposed to it and do like Blankenship, I'd rather spend the money elsewhere. There are a few cover 1/cover 2 zone type of safeties I like in the draft I think we can get in the mid rounds (Kilgore, Wheatley, Genesis Smith, Clark).

I would rather see our money be used at short term LT, edge, 3-tech DT, or LB personally.

Decker had a bad 2025, but could be worth a look as a stop gap

I'd feel much more comfortable going into 2026 with him as a starter and Yosh/rookie as a backup than Yosh/equivalent and a rookie prayer as backup or starter.

Also, this is where a smaller extension for Icky would come in handy. Extend him for 2 years as suggested in another thread, spread out that 5th year option salary cap hit, use the relief to sign Decker, and give Icky time to recover and evaluate instead of taking a shot in the dark after a year or longer full recovery period.

Teams like Houston are gonna go all out for Oline help.

Yes the Icky thing really kills us this year with a 17.4 I think, million dollar hole, for nothing.

His extension would likely have reduced his 2026 hit. But the extension was going to be massive.

At the same time, the massive extension money is largely freed up now and can go elsewhere.  There is just no way he should be in line for the same payday as pre injury.
I say largely freed because maybe we can do a little hollowed out extension to give him a window to get back and stay with the team past this year. Snap count and/or other incentives for 2027. Something that leaves the door open for him to get a fresh contract that reflects his value moving into 2028. Whatever that proves to be.
We’d have a lot of that money that was earmarked for his extension available to us starting next year.
