ACL repair and recovery

How far has ACL repair and recovery advanced since Thomas Davis had the injuries? I recall hearing that he would probably never play at a high level again. Not everyone is T.D. He proved them all wrong.

I'm sure with new surgical advancements the repair would be miles of what it used to be. If Brooks is used right and fully recovered, could he possibly have a successful comeback after two tears to the same knee?

Anyone with medical knowledge on this topic know if thats even possible? Canales said he should be ready for training camp. Ready for camp and playing at a high level are two different animals.

Best I know nothing has changed for the surgery part, but the recovery has been reduced.

Plus you need to see all the damage in the knee, many times you don't know until you look.. Then the surgery just lasts longer and rehab is longer too.

It all depends on what damage was found and how well the surgery takes. I think trust is going to be a huge factor. As someone who's had multiple knee injuries, it takes a while to feel safe doing everything without that splinter of doubt in the back of your mind again. I can't imagine what that would feel like for a NFL players.

I have no expertise, but that won’t stop me from pretending I have insight.
I always wondered if the first surgery was done correctly or in the best way, and maybe the repair failed because it was just destined to fail.
It lets me think that if it is done right he can get back to the level expected at draft time. It is more hope than anything.

But does this apply to high-level athletes?

Obviously it is possible because we've all seen it with T.D. The real question is how common is it for an elite athlete to recover fully after two tears.

What T.D. did was special, not just in football but for any athlete in general.

Injuries are specific to the person.  Some athletes can recover and get back to full speed from major injuries and others cannot.  I think part of it is mental because if you hesitate or don't fully trust the repair, you can get reinjured easier.  This is my theory and I'm certainly not a pro athlete, but I played in college and tore my acl.

There probably isn’t an orthopedic surgery that has had more improvement in technique and outcomes over the last two decades than the acl repair. Because of its importance in pro sports and the sheer number that surgeons do there have been lots of opportunities to practice

1. Better techniques - arthroscopic v open surgery means people heal faster

2. More training - all sports med surgeons have tons of experience doing them

3. better imaging - later generations of mri are more sensitive

4. better therapy - PTs have gotten better at rehabbing them and the theories of rehab have improved a lot.

No idea about brooks in particular tho, but I’d describe that overall situation as “not great”

Brooks had a botch in his first surgery or the rehab. It took too long for him to be cleared. Then a quick tear again…it was fuged. If he isn’t ready today…he’s fuging done.

TD had double knee surgery the last time. They took his patella tendon from one knee to make the ACL for the other. They usually use hamstring to make the new ACL, but since that failed him twice they went to this other poo. I heard he was screaming out in pain trying to make one revolution on the bike during rehab.
