Round 3: The Carolina Panthers select WR Chris Brazzell II (Tennessee)

Once upon a time we had a guy who had the nickname "Swole Bones" at TE who was a physical monster. In the end it didn't matter.

Brazzell is 6'4 198 and only 22 years old with plenty of time to grow into his frame.

Not mad at the talent at all, just really wanted to go defense again here. I do like the guy, him and tet can be a lethal combo if everything goes right. It’s clear we want to get big chunk plays in the passing game, just still think we dont have the qb to do it consistently.

Did you just see his highlight tape I thought Bryce was his QB every catch was him turned all the way around waiting on the ball. Loll but seriously Bryce can do enough bc you’re never throwing it 50 yards in the air he needs like 30 air yards if he has a step or Mosses his defender we’re good it’s considered a deep ball good accomplished. One problem is Bryce didn't let it fly enough he was extremely cautious on not just throwing 50/50 balls we’re going to need a lil more of that this season. If they’re even let it fly hopefully he’ll have the confidence and trust in himself and the line to launch a few more deep shots. Him running for his life consistently kinda deters that thought process of sit back and let it fly deep bc they’re coming through the line in two Mississippi this year we have the weapons and the line for more shots as long as the line can stay healthy.

Is this going to be Robbie Anderson 2.0?

Anderson was fine until he became a headcase and started getting high on his own hype and stopped thinking he needed to put in the work to continue to develop.

I suppose if the defense is further upgraded and it sure seems to be, maybe tossing a deep up for grabs ball won’t penalize failure (turnover) as much. So maybe we are more willing to take a risk.

I mean, he was over 90 percent on the boundary at Tulane as well, but he did run on the left a little more than half of the time, so at least we know that he's not limited to the right as all Matt Harmon seemed to talk about. He still didn't do much slot work at all. There isn't any specific info about specific routes, motion or nuance, and that's where we really have to pivot back to scouting profiles. But you can imagine that boundary receivers are going to basically be used for "go" routes.

To be fair I don’t think we lack a WR that can play the slot. Tet, Coker, horn and I believe XL can all play the slot. What we need is some outside WR and this guy can play that role. The question is can he play this role at a NFL level. I think we have the staff that can get the best out of him. While I do think there’s a good chance XL is done and he will end up taking XL role, XL could finally hit his stride this year and we end up seeing him get all the reps and Brazzell doesn’t play a lot this year. Honestly I wouldn’t complain if that happens cause I would like to see XL not end up being a bust.

with that said, if XL does end up being a bust and showing little to no improvement this year then this pick makes even more sense. All it takes is an injury to Coker or Tet and we are going to be screwed by having XL as our #2 WR. This gives us insurance and a player with a lot of potential.

That's what I meant. I was asking is he going to be another tall deep threat for us on the field, not the character.

Tom Brady was drafted 199!!!

you don’t build around these kinds of outliers

You also don’t build a team on outliers that you’ll find a stud of an offensive or defensive tackle in the fourth round. That’s why tackles go stupid early. But we only get so many early picks so after the first and second round, you go for the potential. If the guys were polished, they would have been first or second rounders. So this draft we went for the trenches early to build inside out and took a flier on possibility and potential. Like the Raiders picking McCoy first pick of the fourth round. A guy if not hurt was consensus #1 DB year prior. Maybe he never returns to form. Maybe they got a perennial pro bowler in the fourth round. That’s what we did.

I know to this point, he's been basically JAG, but don't forget about Metchie.

Beyond the 50, deep ball interception, same as a punt.  Maybe better than a punt, if there’s no interception return.  Not a bad strategy once a game.

I don’t get your meaning. I wouldn’t have taken a tackle that late. If I’m GM my middle rounds are almost always on the de-emphasized positions that see top 5 type of prospects going there. Interior line, LB, Safety, etc.

I don’t dislike Brazzell in a vacuum but if past is prologue….

I don't know if this was mentioned yet, but Brazzell II has NFL bloodlines. His dad was drafted in 1998 and played for the Cowboys and Jets. That eases some of the skepticism I have about his route running. I'm sure Sr. showed him the ropes and prepared him for the League. Maybe he will be the first successful Tennessee WR in the modern NFL.

I’ll add to this: Brazzell has a lot of traits I like, he was consensus big board a lot higher than this. He has work to do-UF showed route chart and over half of what he did at Tenn was screens, hitches, and go’s. As basic as it gets. But I don’t hate the player at all.

Especially when you have two physical guys taking care of the middle of the field and intermediate routes.

I do prefer the shifty smaller guys as my deep threat, but a 6’4” guy that can Moss people is intriguing. Bryce just has to get it to him.

    • Not sure how much he was a long term piece of this team.   Sucks to not have him as part of the rotation.   Looks like it's Lee Hunter time.
    • This post was an error. Oops and sorry for the errors in the previous one. Too slow to edit.   We’ll see what they do.
    • I am not sure he will put the over the games but we’ll probably have them.   Two things I am thinking.  We have 4 preseason games.  All the coaches have enough service time to know the standards that are in place for decades. If I recall it was play your starters just a series to start woth and build it up until week theee where play a lot and you have week four to set hour roster. Evaluate before cuts.   Bevell will certainly have the whole thing down pat.   I’d they don’t do the fries and frie air will worry too. Because it is set up to do that.     I have said since they went t three preseason people have to figure a new way are still feeling it out and trying things.  We don’t have to this year.
