The fact that his BS was called out by several of the athletes he's covered speaks volumes too.

Nicest thing I can say about Dave is that he got in early on a small market, and he was ahead of his time in that he's been a sensationalist hack since before Twitter existed.

Never forget when Twitter likes were public that all of his likes were videos of hardcore porn. He was probably in Goon Mode half the time he was in the media room. Quintennial Boomer retard. the WOAT.

ESPN’s Carolina Panthers reporter David Newton announced his retirement today.

He may have had his faults, but I appreciate a long, well-respected career. Wishing Newton the best of luck in retirement (even if everyone else is joyful of his exit lol).

Well, a long career at least.

It speaks volumes about what a joke the field of sports journalism is.

As a  lifelong journalist, I hate to spur infighting in the industry, but to be honest I've watched sports move from the back pages to the front. It says a lot about our society and what we value. Want to know how your tax dollars are being spent or if the new sewer project is going to disrupt the city for a while? No one wants or will read that. Did some dude get a triple double in one of the four billion games of the NBA playoffs? They'll line up to read that for days, pay money for it and bet on it.

fug it, though. Bread and circuses, bread and circuses. Sports reporter throws out a stupid question about some guys roaring around a track turning to the left, to the left, straight, to the left, to the left, straight. We probably shouldn't notice but we'll crucify him for that. Of course, if it's a White House press pool reporter that asks a smart question, they'll crucify that person, too.

Make of it what you will.

The job just really passed him by.

He came up when basically you just needed to get three or four quotes, toss a couple of team provided stats in there, and stretch it out to column length. you got your copy in by 330, out the door by 4, then chill/shmooze the rest of the day.

If you were really good you got a book deal. Every now and then you got to write an editorial. The goal of the profession was like Peter King where ostensibly you’re a beat writer for whomever but you get paid to just shoot the poo.

now it’s a 24 hour job, you’ve gotta be social media savvy, the pace has increased substantially, you’re expected to produce more than ever, you gotta be able to look through bullshit etc. there’s still risk of industry capture where you just become a mouth piece. Sheena Quick is obviously shameless. I don’t think Newton ever aspired to be more than an inoffensive beat writer, but even that relatively simple role was just more than he was cut out for.

its even worse when you’re covering a team that expects the Fourth Estate to act as a PR extension, or considers them on par with buying Twitter bots to promote Bryce.

there were over thirty papers that covered the panthers first training camp. In that environment there’s room for boring guys like newton, and they may even be incentivized to push the boundary a little. But today that just isn’t the case and most of the guys are hanging on until retirement (person, gantt) or they’re good and gonna be matched up like Jordan.

im not defending the current state of sports journalism, just saying that what counts as a meat and potatoes beat writer passed newton by. He’s retiring well past his sell by date, but that’s pretty common for his generation in general.

That makes sense and good info Fitz. One of my friend of friend met David Newton at a event. They were talking in a group circle and he was the type that had no filter. After 10 mins or so passed he asked David why he constantly miss-spelled, wrong info, and over-all poor Twitter/x structure. David told him it generated more "clicks" and "traffic' when he did that, so he just kept doing it. He also said he came off as smarter than sounds and over all a like-able guy. David has fooled us...

He's gone that's that no hate for the guy.

There is a realistic probability we end up with someone that is either a push in comparison or possibly worse. It's better to prepare for the possibility in case.

Honestly don't think we can get anything worse outside of maybe the male reporter version of Russini...

Well we've dogged on Joe Person for years and he's been pretty much the only constant around here. Just saying keep expectations low.

    • Basically agree.  He is the one of that bunch that offers upgraded pass catching along with he is supposed to be kind of special.   Then you have the OL and the ideas that if they perform you can have JAG backs and still do well. So okay we could be fine.  But Brooks is important and to me that receiving element sets him apart.  So there sure is something riding on him.     What strikes me as incongruent is people over in Atlanta or those that follow them look at Penix with a third surgery and act like it is no big deal.      And we are on pins and needles over Brooks.  Either they should worry a lot more or we should worry a lot less.
    • I usually go a game or two optimist over the consensus here but this is too early for me to say. I need to see some players on the field.  I am not feeling real optimistic though.
    • Okay as a ‘take CJ’ fan I actually don’t obsess over CJ and Houston, contrary to the narrative.  But I thought I picked up some noise that his OL left a lot to be desired.    Not a single Beyce supporter would judge him harshly if he had a crappy OL. We all know that.    So be fair about it.  A QB needs to be protected.  Especially a guy that gets to his spot and wants to finish the play from there. Which CJ is.
