Smitty Got A Call Reversed Yesterday...?

I'm sure you all noticed that the illegal formation call was reversed after they had already announced the penalty. I noticed Steve walked over and chatted them up for maybe a minute before they decided to reverse the penalty.

Did they say anything about that on the broadcast? Did Steve Smith teach the refs "the rules and regulations" of the game?

He, Olsen and Gross argued that it was an illegible receiver (ie a lineman) that was covered... they did get the call overturned.

The refs were just scared Steve would mock them after the game if they didn't overturn it.

I can't ever remember a player talking themselves out of a flag after the penalty has already been announced.  Sometimes (rarely) it can happen after the flag, but before the announcement, but I've never seen it happen after the announcement.  Smitty gonna go into legal practice after retirement?

I'm not positive on what exactly the formation is, but I believe Gross lined up up on the right, beside Bell, with no true Left Tackle.  I think they threw the flag on Gross, thinking he was a TE on the end of the line. I'd have to go back and look at the DVR though.

This. Same thing happens when a seasoned hitter in baseball doesn't swing at a borderline pitch. 9 times out of 10, the ump will call it a ball (because if he didn't think it's a strike, then it's not a strike). The officials in any sport respect the guys who know they game and have played it for a long time and will actually listen to them. It's an earned privilege. Basically this means that Smitty is at a Derek Jeter strata of respect in the sport.

I kept waiting for a replay from CBS but none was forthcoming so I guess I will never know what the fug that whole episode was about.

Yeah, heard Gross asked about it during the post-game show on WBT - he said they ruled it as if he had reported as eligible when he had not, so when he and Smitty reminded them of this they reversed the call. 

 

Can't remember the last time I saw a player get a ref to reverse a call like that, just another reason we're incredibly fortunate to have these guys.
