NFL may change clock rules

As the NFL continues its efforts to make the Pro Bowl seem more like a celebration of the best players in the league and less like a preseason game that is for some reason being played eight months too early and with players wearing a bunch of different helmets, different rules regarding the timing of the game are being trotted out.

The differences are as follows:

1. A two-minute warning will be added to the first and third quarters and the ball will change hands after each quarter.

2. After the two-minute warning of each quarter, if the offense does not gain at least one yard, the game clock will stop and not start again until the next snap.

3. After an incomplete pass the game clock will start on the referee’s signal, except inside the last two minutes of the first half and the last five minutes of the second half.

4. A 35/25-second play clock will be used instead of the normal 40/25-second clock.

5. The game clock will not stop after a quarterback sack at any point during the game.

The rules seem like a combination of trying to encourage more offense and trying not to allow the game to drag out too long. Some of these rules seem kind of bizarre; others seem kind of fun. None of them is likely to make a big difference, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see the NFL take a close look at a few of the rules (particularly switching the 40-second play clock to a 35-second play clock) and potentially use them in the regular season as well.

What none of these rules does, however, is force the players to take the game seriously. Which is what would really make the Pro Bowl entertaining.

wow, really weird.  no way they can implement change of possession at the end of each quarter.  if a team has the ball at an undesirable spot of the field, they would just punt it with :20 left, let the other team run their one play and get the ball right back.

    • As long as Morgan is the GM, Young will be the QB. Young is 100% Morgan's guy. The contract extension is pretty much guaranteed unless Young suffers a career ending injury this season.
    • People really need to stop placing Dan Morgan on some kind of infallible pedestal. He is absolutely in lockstop with Tepper regarding Bryce and has been all along. As far as the team being okay with 185 passing yards per game. We better have a proven monster RB in our backfield then. Presently that guy is not on the roster. Chuba has one outlier season so far and the other guys have proven nothing. Not what you would call a great recipe. The only thing we can hope at this juncture is that the highest paid OL in the league for the second year in a row elevates their play from last season and opens up some massive holes even our RB's can get through. But it still doesn't resolve the issue of predictability. With no viable passing game it is much easier to shut down any run game. No defenses are scared of Bryce's arm. It is what it is.
    • i lived in Atlanta from 84'to 92' & back then it was indeed a very different time without the internet & access to information 24/7. shortly after i moved back home to western NC around 93' or 94' the Carolina Panthers were awarded an NfL franchise & began their inaugural season in 95' so ike you i have seen the Carolina Panthers, ,the NFL ,technology, fans all evolve over the many a moon & years now some for the better & others not so ...just saying
