David Newton's newest piece discusses what we all know by now, if we didn't know it when he first came: Business first! Newton touches on the Steve Smith as well, who by the way is STILL no guarantee to be on the roster in 2014, and writes pretty much as a matter of fact that Gross really didn't like Gettleman when G-man first came (just in case you thought Gross was joking during his press conference, or just really couldn't tell, like me).

 

"I didn't like you very much last offseason, but I got over that," Gross said with a smile. 

He was referring to Gettleman asking him to restructure his contract a year ago, in essence making 2013 the last season of what Gross planned to be his final NFL contract. 

Gross wasn't happy about it at the time, but he went along with the request because he's a team player and it allowed Gettleman salary-cap room to improve the team in other areas. 

As he got to know Gettleman, Gross learned to like him. 

 

 

Note that Newton is surmising that Gettleman probably hates that he asked Gross to restructure as he probably realizes that he miscalculated Gross' value. Hmmm...if you know what I'm saying.  ;)

 

I somehow missed this quote from Greg Hardy, so in case you missed it too, the Kraken---as only he can do---flat out said that G-man pissed people off:

 

"When I went there as a rookie, that's all everybody told me about, that it's a real family organization 'cause that's how Jerry Richardson runs it," defensive end Greg Hardy told me during a Wednesday trip to ESPN headquarters. 

"Gettleman coming in with a money-first attitude ticked everybody off, man. So he kind of changed the face of the organization to: It is a business, and once business is settled we can be a family."

 

 

I find that kind of ironic in a way, because this could be a reason why Hardy is seemingly all about the money.  :money: Business, baby! I can respect that, especially within the context of what G-man has brought to the table.  :geek:

 

At the end of the day, just like the players, Panthers fans must be very aware now that it's a new day. I love G-man's fiscal responsibility and team building philosophy so far, but I still say that there is room for growth in regards to being tactful in reference to the public relations aspect of the team, which ultimately plays its part in not only being responsible for team business, but also respectful of the players business.   :)

All I have to say is its about time. Gettleman can make the tough decisions and JR can give the group hugs. It's time for this organization to grow a set of balls. Just win. Just give me, as a fan, the ability to thump my chest and tell every asshole I see in Charlotte with Steelers gear or Cowboys gear to go suck it because my team is better than the team they bandwagon hopped.* That's all I ask.

*I do this anyway but it'd be nice to have the team to back me up on a consistent basis.

Well he should ultimately be about what is best for the franchise as a whole first. That's his job. I'm fine with that, I agree with Zod.

 

Having said that, there are still ways to go about things. I certainly think that Gettleman is learning that as he goes.

Tact. There is so many ways to look at that.  

 

Being up front an honest... is sometimes looked at as being abrupt.

 

However if you sugar coat it, people look at you as deceitful.

 

 

I prefer the Gettleman way.

      For starters, and again I am not sure what his capacity is in the media or how connected he is to the team, but I posted above Al Wallace says he is "absolutely" getting 50+ a year and he deserves it.  I obviously strongly disagree with it but it feels like like season when the team is slow leaking info to gauge the temp.   Secondly nobody on Gods green earth is going to sign an extension making less than he is making now.  Thats just crazy talk.

      No. Physical tools alone aren't enough. There are plenty of examples of draft busts to support that. Aost all of them had the physical tools and that wasn't enough. But Bryce is a perfect example of the opposite. Absolutely elite intangibles aren't enough either. If you simply don't have the physical abilities all the football intelligence and work ethic in the world won't be enough to overcome it. Just look to the sidelines every Sunday. We call those people "coaches".

      As much as I despise Billy B, his philosophy on QBs is how I would approach things if I were a GM. You always keep looking for your next starter.  He has Bledsoe, who got injured and his backup ended up being the GOAT. Even while he had that going, he kept getting his next guy and developing them. When Brady got hurt, Cassel stepped in and went 11-5 and they missed the wild card by dumb luck. Who knows how far they would have gone if they had gotten in. Jimmy Gs career started in NE. There were others, but he always kept looking.  You can't be afraid to keep looking for your next starter, but it looks like we're afraid to look for more than a marginal one. If you're going to offer a $25m contract with incentives, that screams marginal QB. It also screams you're just a transition until we find our guy. After a 10 or 11 win season, he's not accepting that offer. And then you're in a Daniel Jones situation. Do you pay for a year of success and pray it wasn't a one year wonder?  To this point, Bryce has really produced nothing, yet for whatever reason, our FO has not even sniffed at the idea that we need a real QB room with real QBs. Dalton was never starter potential, Plummer was a joke. KP certainly isn't, neither is Grier.  Our approach to the QB room needs to be one of strength not fear. Bring in guys who can compete or who you think can compete. This is THE elite position, in an elite sport, paid premium salary, where production matters. Either you produce or you can lose your job. It's not mean, it's just the reality of the position.  And I'm really just tired of our candy ass approach to it.
