Speed & Quickness at WR

Underwood has speed, but I read somewhere that it takes him a little more time to get to top speed.  He is not as quick as Ginn.  Perhaps he has better hands though.  Like our other FA pick-ups, I personally believe that he is best suited for a support role  (and all you have to do is glean his entire body of work).

Of course it's not necessarily a bad thing that we have free agents that would be WR3/4s somewhere else because we have proven that we can have modest success with these JAGs.  I am just wouldn't put money on us being able to overcome the top echelon teams in the league, who probably only got better, especially on the offensive side of the ball.

As I have mentioned countless times, Denarius Moore would fill that speed-big-play guy role if he ends up on the roster somehow (hopefully sooner rather than later).  But, who knows, maybe Tavares King can fill that role as he had plenty of big plays coming out of college.

Considering Ginn's best time was 4.28 and Underwood was 4.31 which is 3 one hundreds of a second behind or the blink of an eye, he is for all intents and purposes just as fast as Ginn and has to be just as fast off the line unless he has unbelievable catch up speed after the first 10 yards.  Given a 4.31 is roughly 1 tenth of a second off the fastest 40 time in NFl history which I beleive was 4.19, I think he is plenty fast.

Ginn didnt explode off the line either. I mean 4.28, he explodes but not like Smitty. Different body and running type. Ginn was a top speed and mid range speed guy. If he got by you, he was gone, but he wasnt going to just run around you at the line.

If we are looking for a homerun threat, Tiquan should be fine. Quickness doesn't matter too much on deep routes.  Also, those deep throws don't have to happen that often or connect every time to have those safeties backing up a step.

Plus, this is the year Taye Biddle's emerges from the pack. There is no stopping us.

Underwood is about as sexy of an option as Ginn was this time last year....

Only thing to worry about is the law of averages. No way all these bargain basement players workout as well as a year ago

Neither was Ginn. He didn't do anything special coming into Carolina. He saw the field barely at all in SF. Give underwood a shot. Probably won't go off and have a break out year, but he will be a thread deep and will stretch the field.

I like our WR corps a lot. Gives Cam something he has never had. Route consistency and Hands.

That's sounds like what people said about Ginn coming in but with even less faith...except Underwood produced 2 consecutive 400+ yard and 2+ TD seasons in a row with Glennon and Freeman throwing the ball.

Ginn had 3 pretty good seasons with the Dolphins, he had almost 800 yards 1 year. And honestly Cam made Ginn good in my opinion... Underwood could match Ginn's numbers but I'm saying he's never going to be a top slot guy with speed, like Cruz or Cobb etc. Ginn never will either and was never going to even if we kept him. Brown and King could end being top guys like that, though it is unlikely

Sure he has plenty of speed (and I would bet that he does have good closing speed considering his long strides). That wasn't really the issue.  He is what he is.

There is a distinction between being fast and quick, and Underwood is not as quick as Ginn.  The thing is though, it's not like either one has displayed skills enough to be a consistent play maker.  People can argue that point if they like, but I just don't believe it.

I have resigned myself to the fact that this coming season we're doing the best we can with what we have at receiver due to cap constraints.  If we can get over the hump with what we have somewhere on this 90 man roster, I'll be ecstatic. But if we can't, I won't be surprised, nor jumping off any bridges.

I think many here may also be surprised by one of our vets. Pilares is a guy with some speed and twitch, and although he has been used very sparingly other than kick returns (in part due to injuries), he generally delivered when he had opportunities on offense.

He could be our sleeper in the WR corps this year as a slot option.

Anyone know what KB's weight situation is like right now?

I heard he was up to 245 at the end of June. Was 240 at combine. I assume with training camp coming up combined with the heat those 5 pounds aren't that big of a deal. I just hope he isn't much more north of 245 right now

This biggest thing to worry about with ginn leaving is the pr ko returns. He provided a spark and was dangerous everytime he touched the ball. That was an underrated quality about him and I think well miss it next year

I agree he was a threat, but did he return anything to the house in the regular season? I know he had a good yards average

I'm fine with the group we have. The media will continue to understimate them, but who cares, they should have a chip on their shoulders at this point. Honestly I'm more concerned about picking up where we left off in the return game, and obviously the OL gelling quickly.

^^^^THIS^^^^

Avant and Cotchery may not be blazing speed but they know how to get open and that is what we need.  When they get open, history says that when the ball is thrown to them, they catch it.

Add Underwood with blazing speed., similar to Ginn, you have the take the top off the defense player.

Finally the Rookie KB.  I have predicted in a couple other threads that KB will be Rookie in name only.  I believe the friendship and closeness that KB and Cam are developing is gong to show on the field.

I believe that Cam is going to make KB be a better player right off the bat.  Cam is going to show a leadership with KB that we have not seen from him yet.  I believe Cam is overly excited about working with KB.  He doesn't have a go to guy and Cam wants him to be that go to guy.  Why not, 6'5" with an ungodly catch radius.
