Defense could be a strength again in 2015

The big picture is looking very promising. This secondary will be very good and adding a safety or two will complete that unit. Add another stout DE to compliment C.J and a young talented K.E (along with Alexander and Addison as rotation), and that unit will be back also. They have the DT spots anchored as well as excellent linebackers. So this defense is not far from being a dominant unit once again. With some FA money to spend and another quality draft, things could be very different in 2015. No matter what may happen come next Sunday, the future is bright and I will be looking forward to see what next year brings.

i don't think CJ is gone. he's stepped up after shaking his injury and proved how valuable he is to a team that's been missing a pass rush all year. pair him with ealy on a cheap rookie deal next year and your overall cap commitment to the DE position isn't so terrible (though i'd love to see us restructure him somehow, and i'm sure getts will try.)

i expect the DL to look fantastic next year, the linebacker corps about the same (which is outstanding) and some serious upgrades at safety. look for one of our marquee free agent signings to be at safety if anyone's there to be had. we'll probably draft a guy to play the nickel since bene and norman look like fuging ballers on the outside.

we're not far off.

I would look at Defensive Tackles and Ends in the draft. Maybe not as high picks but at least look. Dwan has been a great pro for us but time is not on his side.

I would look for a Safety or Two. Maybe one via draft and one via veteran signing. Colin Jones has been a revelation. The guy isn't experienced but his recovery speed has been crucial in the past few weeks. I wouldn't settle for Norman and Bene. They look great but you can always use more talent in the secondary.

I see reasons for excitement but we have a lot of talented guys getting in line for 2nd contracts. We need to try and win before we lose some of them.

    • I consider last year Bryce's rookie year.....and I expect some regression/D adjustment in his second season in Canales' O.  Film is film.   So yeah, I agree....he won't be the dude that opened up the year week 1 or closed the door week 17.  We will get some dude in between it all most likely.  Which IMO puts us in a really awkward no man's land with Bryce.
    • The question is which Bryce shows up game 1. Do we get week 2 (2024) Bryce, or week 18 (2024) Bryce?  I will say that his progression after the benching last year was amazing. He literally got better every game - sans Dallas. Like every week he did something we hadn't seen him do before. And it wasn't luck, toss it up for grabs plays like Penix did against Carolina. Penix was just throwing the ball as hard as he could in the direction of a receiver and hoping they'd make a play for him. What we saw from Bryce was different. Decision making, reading defenses, recognizing blitzes and where they were coming from, knowing his hot, avoiding pressure and manipulating the pocket, throwing with anticipation, taking shots downfield, and running the ball surprisingly well. Stats don't always tell the story. Did he miss some throws that he should have made - sure did. But the clutch gene is strong with this one. One score game and Carolina has the ball with 2 minutes on the clock - I'm confident he'll give them a chance to win more than he doesn't.
    • I really like David Moore. He's a reliable WR. Smart, doesn't drop the ball and he's where he's supposed to be. Now, he ain't gonna route up a DB. He ain't gonna 50/50 ball a DB. He ain't gonna run by a DB either. But he runs a good enough route and catches the ball - definitely an NFL average WR. Every team could use a David Moore. Now if this receiving group can force Dan and Dave to let him go, then this team has come a long way since 2023. A LONG way. But I will say that Horn's speed is a big deal. They don't really have another guy with speed and quickness to blow the top off the defense and make guys miss in space after the catch, though he is still a rookie and hasn't done it in the NFL. If he and Renfrow push Moore out, then we might actually have something gents. Plus I see Renfrow as Thielen's replacement in 2026. I just don't think Coker is the reliable, move the chains guy like Thielen. Could be wrong.
