Panthers Roster Trivia - Quiz #1 (ANSWERS NOW POSTED)

Being the stats geek that I am, I've been doing some work to create a customized version of the current Panthers Roster, compiling some statistics from various websites to create a more in-depth picture of the roster.  I'll share it soon, and I will also continue the series on comparing the Panthers' rosters over time...

In the meantime, I thought it would be fun to post a series of roster trivia questions.   No prize for winning, but hopefully there will be lots of pie and Huddle infamy.  Each quiz will be open for about 24 hours.  These questions are based on the current roster (8/16/2015) posted at Panthers.com which has 92 players (90 active/pup, 2 on IR).

OK, ready, let's play:

  • 1)  Give your best estimate as to how many players on the current (92 player) roster have been with the Panthers for their entire career, including 2015 rookies.
  • 2)  How many players drafted by the Panthers are on the roster?
  • 3)  How many 1st round draft picks are on the roster (drafted by Panthers or any team)?  Can you name them?

OK, that's it for this round.  More questions tomorrow!

Are we supposed to do this by memory or to look it up? I don't feel like looking up specifics but if you want me to just take my best guess I'd go ahead. I'm sure somebody (or you) will post all the exact answers in the next day or so and the guesses won't matter, but whatever. Interesting idea while we all await some real Panthers football.

We have TWO winners already for question 3, so I will reveal that answer here:

3)  How many 1st round draft picks are on the roster (drafted by Panthers or any team)?  Can you name them?

@panthers34 was first with the right answer and @L-TownCat

is also correct.  We currently have 10 1st round draft picks on our roster.  7 of those are Panthers draftees, 3 were acquired by trade or as free agents.  We have added 2 1st round picks in the offseason:

Benjamin, Kelvin

2014

#28

Davis, Thomas

2005

#14

Ginn, Ted

2007

#9

Kuechly, Luke

2012

#9

Lotulelei, Star

2013

#14

Newton, Cam

2011

# 1

Oher, Michael

2009

#23

Olsen, Greg

2007

#31

Stewart, Jonathan

2008

#13

Thompson, Shaq

2015

#25

I would have been incorrect in answering this myself if not for the research I had done.  I did not know that Ginn was a 1st round pick.  I had remembered reading that Oher was a 1st round pick, so that was not a surprise.

Please give lots of PIE to @Panthers34

and runner up @L-townCat

for the correct answer to Q. 3

I'll reveal the answers to Q1 & Q2 in a few hours.  The guesses are not too bad, but no winner yet.

Ok, even though there are no new guesses, I'll post the answers to questions 1 and 2 now.  I hope even if there aren't too many folks guessing that the questions & answers are still interesting?  I'll try another set of questions in a little while.  Feel free to suggest questions you have about the roster - i.e. facts / data that would interest you.  I'll try to answer any I can using the database I'm working on.

So:  Q. 1: Give your best estimate as to how many players on the current (92 player) roster have been with the Panthers for their entire career, including 2015 rookies.

ANSWER:  (as of last night before releasing Childers & signing Wile) -

the total is 44, (of whom 14 are rookies from the 2015 Draft / UDFAs.)

So nearly half of our current roster are "Panthers born & bred".  I'd be interested to know how that compares with other teams.  We seem to do less free agent wheeling and dealing and trading than some teams, and loyalty to the organization seems quite high.  If I can do some comparative research between Panthers & other teams at some point, I will.  But probably it would be better to wait for the 53 man roster to be set first.

***

Our Winner:  @L-TownCat who had a really good and close guess of 40.  Well done.

    • I'm convinced Harden wants to do nothing but put up pretty shots and try to draw fouls and then do nothing on defense lol. Brunson went off though
    • Baker was traded before he played his 5th year.  RGIII was cut before playing his 5th year. So it is rare but it happens.
    • Time to hit 4000 yards and 30 TDs (including rushing). I don't care about INTs anymore. That's a big part of the problem. He plays uber conservative until the game is on the line. Playing not to lose, instead of playing to win. Time to let it friggin rip from the get. The team can win with a pick or 2 if he has 3-4 TDs. Stop playing scared.  But to be fair, his WRs have not been great. You all can bash about 1st round picks and O-line cap all you want.  Chuba as your #1 RB his entire career.  Adam Thielen as your best WR for 2 of 3 seasons is ridiculous. Then a rookie as your best in the 3rd season. Legette is not a 1st round talent. Probably closer to a 4th if you compare him to Brazzel this year. Coker has been a walking injury report. Nothing else to really speak of at WR or TE. Jimmy Horn has potential, but he is not an NFL starter yet. Oline has been better as run blockers than pass blockers. Ickey has always been so-so as a pass blocking LT. Center has been a revolving door for 3 years. Damien Lewis has been as marketed. Hunt is a great run blocker but an ok pass blocker - when healthy. Moton has been solid at RT. Biggest problem with the oline has been depth. When someone went down, their replacement became a glaring weakness. Overall a good but not great unit the last 2 years. 2023 was a ish show. Nothing else to say.  Not one game breaker, take it to the house offensive weapon since DJ Moore. Hopefully we get a little of that from Brazzell.  Either way, in his 4th season, it doesn't matter. You have to be able to overcome whatever comes your way. First 3 seasons with a young supporting cast is defendable. Can't use that anymore though. 3rd year in the offense. 3rd year with the same HC.
