Gil Brandt has lost his damn mind

As a fan, it's kind of hard to stomach that idea!  Shula?  Good?  Then again, we're undefeated, two straight NFC South Championships, usually at the top of the running leader boards....

I mean, we can all rag on Shula, but there are some results.  I still find it hard to accept that Shula is THAT good of a HC option for someone.  I have a hard time with that.  How much of the success is on Cam's arm and legs?  Though you have to admit, we've had much better game plans this year.

Tough one, though I'll have to give to to Brandt.  He's forgotten more about the NFL than I will ever learn.

The gripe against Cam early in his career was that he put up big numbers in year one and two.. but could not win games. But winning games is as equally about coaching as it is about performance. Cam was a rookie and things were seemingly looking very easy for him.

I'd like you to remember that Cam's rookie campaign, he broke passing and rushing records... without OTA's.

Winning is not just the responsibility of the QB. Its a coaching challenge. We didnt start seeing wins until we saw the emergence of Riverboat Ron.

I feel like Chud did a nice job with his play selection but wanted too much to be a head coach. That didnt work out too well for him. (He's currently an assistant head coach in Indianapolis.)

I have a few issues with Shula. Shula doesnt play to the strength of his quarterback. People think Cam's strength is running...

Yes Cam can run, but calling running plays for him does not maximize his strength. Cam is most dangerous when he is a THREAT to run and pass in the same play. Cam in the shotgun, reading the defense... taking what they give him is when he is unstoppable. There is no scheme for this because there's always a mismatch. Cam looks, looks, pump fakes, takes off. (first down point.) Next play, Cam looks, 6 yard check down. Next play, Cam looks, starts to run, defense commits to Cam's run, Cam stays in the pocket, Cam delivers a 24 yard pass to Ginn.

My second issue is his timing. Shula actually has made good calls... But being a good OC, means making the right call at the right time. And THIS is Mike Shulas biggest issue. The point is... Mike Shula will get alot of credit this year for Cam's maturation and development as a passer. But this kid threw for over 4000 yards in his rookie year in a pass first offense.

I feel like Shula is still growing. He's gotten better. But he's nowhere near ready to be a head coach. And he knows it.

isn't this 50% of our offensive strategy?

Bill Polian has said pretty much the same thing raving about the job Shula has done both this year and last. That's one hall of fame GM and honestly Brandt should be in there as well give what he has accomplished build the Cowboys back in there dynasty days. I give them more credibility than anyone posting here.

Gill Brandt is one of the most knowledgeable guys in football right now. He was the head of player personnel when Dallas was in their heyday and is a very good judge of talent.

As for Shula, I just sit back and smile as other folks are acknowledging what I have told the posters here for sometime.  Shula is a good OC when he has the players to run his scheme which is actually quite complex.  He has taken arguably the worst collection of football talent in the NFL last year and not that much better this year and gotten the most out of them.

Make no mistake, Shula is the primary reason that Cam has developed as he has so far.  Keeping him in a quarterback friendly system focusing on what Cam does best has improved him significantly.  His mechanics have also improved thanks to continued work and drills in the offseason and preseason.  Look at guys like Kaepernick who havent developed as far as Cam due to poor coaching.

People are just realizing what I have known for awhile.
