Richard Sherman's 4 Ways to Improve Officiating

Why would they need to explain to players what they did wrong? That's not their job. It's the players/team's coach's job to understand the rules and play by them.

Because of subjectivity from each ref.  Every ref has their own style, preferences, biases, etc so Sherman does have a point.  When a game is live and being played, you as a player need explanation to ensure they do not repeat penalties or cause a game changing penalty.

So they do not do the same thing again.  People can look at the same replay and see two different things.  If the player knows what that specific ref is seeing then they have the opportunity to correct their mistake.

With today's technology they could have officials watching various camera angles and if something is obviously different than the on field call, then that could weigh in on the call.  I wouldn't use this in lieu of on-field officials because you would lose a very important element of the game.  It would only come into play on absolute controversial plays.  Another possibility is having an offense and defense head ref.

Sooooo...instant replay?

My point stands that it's not part of their job at all.

Let some wear google glass.

It can't be perfect but they could get real times calls done faster.

Not enough time for commercials then.  NFL won't have that.  They are complicating the rules to make more money, pretty clear to see honestly.

You could throw a flag somewhere on the field every play, literally every play.  Penalties are like a lock, they won't stop you from getting robbed but it might discourage a few thieves.

As far as judgement calls, there should be an eye in the sky, period.  Just last weekend for example, how judgment ruled Olsen fumbling on the first drive, but didn't rule Ryan fumbling on the KK sack is crazy.  These are so easy to get right, you can get these calls right in 5 seconds with multiple angle HD replays available today.  Hell we know without doubt in our living room or in the stands 10 minutes before replay results are announced on the field.

It's truly amazing that we have these displays and replay controls and it's still left to the discretion of a dude under a hood looking at a fairly small display (by todays standards) who also has an interest in protecting his crew's call.  Get it together NFL.  These judgement calls could be made very quickly and accurately without nearly the interruption to a game that replay is.  NCAA is ahead of the NFL in this regard.

It might not be but Sherman is proposing it could or should be and why it could help.

It's not something that should be handled during the game. Plays should forget that play and get ready for the next one. The refs should stick to doing the only thing that's important for them to do and that's officiate the game. So much goes on in a game it's completely illogical to have them trying to explain things to every single player. Even without them having to do that they've fuged up the clock numerous times. Having them explain to players during the game wouldn't even help anyways because the player would need to see what he was doing and he can't during the game. Sherman's proposing better communication between refs and players. It sounds to me that he's just being a complete bitch about calls and wants to be able to whine about it in the game to get the call changed, like CryBaby was doing at the end of the Pats-Panthers Monday night game in 2013.

Improve officiating by reducing the number of calls/addition by subtraction.

Less rules, simplified and called only when it is blatant/clearly viewed.

Officials that don't have a clear view/good angle should not be throwing a flag.

Ticky tack calls, should be non calls.

Officials are too often reversing critical plays on non existent fouls, adversely affecting the outcome of the games.
