My first thought - Can Ryan help Matt turn his career around? Could we get him for a reasonable price? He's young enough that I certainly think he has time for a second chance. I think, mostly, it would boil down to money.

Is Ryan a guru at coaching tackles? I think that could be an odd situation. I could see the reasoning if Matt just needed to stay out of trouble or something but I've not heard anything about that. I think the issue is he's not good.

From what I've read it's not that he's getting into trouble, he just doesn't take football as seriously as he should.

I doubt we could get Matt Kalil for a reasonable price though who knows what kind of pull Ryan has with him. Even with his poor performances, someone would still probably give him $7-8M per year. There is just so much available cap room across the NFL right now and it has to be spent somewhere. He's got all the ability in the world to be a franchise LT so someone will take a gamble.

If we were to sign him one of him or Oher would have to flip to RT next year. Matt did early in his college career but hasn't since and Oher did well at LT so I don't know that we would want to move him after having a good year.

@csx

I don't see it like that. I do most of the hiring at my office. I love to hire people who have been recommended by someone already working at the office. People are more likely to try hard, work hard, and have a positive attitude if they have some sort of vested interest (e.g. they don't want to let someone down or embarrass themselves.) In the ten years I've been here, most of the people who have had short stints with the company have had very few friends on staff.

So it's not necessarily that Ryan would have to coach him up... it's that he could be a familiar face and a friend. Maybe Matt would fit right in, which could lead to something better for him.

Im raising an eyebrow of interest in Matt Kahlil, Kyle Williams (DT depth), and Victor Cruz (doubtful will want too much $$$).  Wouldn't be apposed if we lose Allen and Johnson adding Super Mario to a hometown discount contract like we did for Allen this year.

Who said "all the FAs?"  I'm with that idiot! =P

Kalil is only interesting from the family name, and that he was highly drafted.  Could it work?  Maybe.  But as @Bartin said, there's just too much cap money for someone not to give him a contract to see what he can do.  Now if he get's cut a year later (a la Oher), we're game!

Pierre Garcon or Victor Cruz would look good in Charlotte. i also like Travis Benjamin (not in this article) from the Browns. He's young, fast, and ready to prove himself. He's coming off a rookie contract, and almost got 1000 yards in Cleveland! Not sure if Gettleman wants to spend the cash, but both Garcon and Cruz might give us the SB51 discount, but I doubt it.

I'd stay away from Cruz. He's never going to be himself again after the patellar tendon injury.

I, too, really like Travis Benjamin but I think it's a year too early for him. He's the perfect Ginn replacement after next year when we would have the money to pay him. He's going to get way more than he's worth due to a terrible WR FA class.

Garcon is an interesting possibility.

    • I think the Bevell hire has more to do with adding actual veteran head coaching experience to the staff than anything else. But I do wholeheartedly agree that the obsession in general with Seattle needs to come to an end. I mean we plucked the one guy there to be our GM who turned out to be our worst GM in franchise history in just a few short years and that's really saying something given our history there. Clearly trying to mimick Seattle in any way has not been productive. As far as Idzik many of us have asked the same question but at this point in time it doesn't really matter anymore because Canales is either going to lead this franchise to a winning record or he will be shown the door.
    • Why wasn't here even considered? Better record and save % than any of t he 3 goalies on the US squad.
    • That’s why Bevell is a good move. Idzik might not be chopped liver, he is just inexperienced and even less ready to be the play caller than Canales. I still say the playbook is limited which is a hinderance to calling plays, I would imagine.    Anyway Beavis lol… no Bevell, got to consecutive SBs as an OC and won one with 48 points or something. Should have won the second one. And had several more good years there.    They were the team we had to learn how to beat it took us til the third year I think before we could go into Seattle and successfully compete.   That is glass half full thinking, yep, but that is head and shoulders over what we have had here for a while. Certainly now.     In addition.. It was Canales’ boss. He knew more then , I would bet he knows more now. I can’t look at this as anything but a potential positive thing.  Hell he might be the guy that can look at Dave and say what the fug are you doing? And Dave will listen. I think I can hope for that.  Maybe not.
