Carolina Panthers

Best pick: Cam Newton(2011 NFL Draft, Round 1, No. 1 overall)
The lowdown: The Panthers were able to look past Newton's "fake smile" and made the 2010 Heisman winner and national champ from Auburn the top pick. While the Panthers have featured talented players such as Steve Smith,Julius Peppers and Luke Kuechly, it is Newton who makes the Panthersnationally relevant. Galvanized by Newton's MVP season in 2015, the Panthers posted a franchise-best 15-1 regular-season record and reached their second Super Bowl.

Worst pick: Jason Peter (1998 NFL Draft, Round 1, No. 14 overall)
The lowdown: During the franchise's formative years in the mid to late 1990s, the Panthers swung and missed on a number of first-round draft picks (Kerry Collins in 1995, Tshimanga "Tim" Biakabutukain 1996 and Rae Carruth in 1997). That disappointing run of first-rounders continued with Peter. Peter lasted just four forgettable seasons in Carolina, starting 20 games and registering 7.5 sacks.

As much as I love Cam, I gotta disagree that he is historically the Panthers best pick.

That choice easily goes to #89 in the 3rd round of the 2001 Draft IMO.

As to worst pick, well, Jason Peter is as good a choice as any I guess... lol.  Personally I'd go with Rashard Anderson.

From a value standpoint, it's easily Smitty.

But given the importance surrounding the pick, and the alternatives (Gabbert, giving Clausen another season, etc.) the best pick is Cam.

Cam was the best for sure. No knock on Smitty, he was a huge steal, but taking having the #1 overall pick and taking a franchise QB there is monumentally more important. That's a franchise shifting moment.

Peter sucked, but no pick will ever be worse than that asshole WR sitting in prison. Waste of a 1st round pick AND a PR disaster.  Tough to get worse than that.

Cam was the best, and i think from an on the field standpoint, Armanti Edwards was the worst.

Traded up in the second round literally for nothing. At least peters was on the field for a little while.

If you want to go that route, Ed Kugbila is the only option. No one mentions him because DG has been so good at roster building it hasn't mattered.

If you are the #1 pick in the entire draft, then you are supposed to be good.

3rd rounder Smith, as has been said, has already had a pro bowl career.  Cam might take his place in another 5 years, but Smith has to be the man at this point.

Loser draft pick?  How many fingers can we use?  Carruth has to be it.  1st rounder goes to jail.  Tim B and Peter both battled injuries but did have a little production, not much, but a little

Here's a darkhorse loser. In 2009, we gave up our 2010 1st rounder for Everrette Brown, a guy we thought could supplant Peppers one day. Instead, all we got out of it was two seasons of spinning around like a top until he toppled and fell off our roster.

I'd guess they chose Peter at least partly because he's the highest pick that's generally considered a bust, though I'd have to say Outlaw makes a good point regarding Everette Brown.

Using that framework though, and factoring in impact on the franchise, I think an argument can be made for Kerry Collins.

For best picks, you probably shouldn't forget about Julius Peppers who completely terrorized opposing teams during his years here. Still a decent player, he was phenomenal here and may go down as one of the greatest defensive ends of all time.

Now how he left here... well that did sting a bit, but still, you've got to give the man his well-earned due.

Worst ever, value-wise would have to be Jeff Otah. Sooooo much potential and never reached.

Otah was a Pro Bowl caliber talent when in the field...a beast.  Probably one of the most dominating Ts we have ever had.

he couldn't stay on the field.  People also questioned his heart but you really can't hate on a guy because who wouldn't be overly foolish with his body.   He was a monster of a man with knee issues who wouldn't play hurt.

He wasn't bad in regards to talent.

It all depends on value at the pick. At number 1, Cam should be a franchise QB that carries this team. He is the best overall Panthers pick. Smitty is the best value pick. Borderline HoF because of the log jam at wr in the 3rd is a steal.

Worst use of picks, Gilbert for 2 first rounders.
