Speed Kills

One of the things that upsets me the most is that funchess hasn't been involved much at all this year. I don't know why but I rarely ever hear his name called, I don't know if Cam is just not looking his way or is it that he can't get seperation. We invested a high draft pick in this guy its a bit too early too call him out but I was expected some great stuff from him..

We have a bunch of decent receivers , but almost all of them have suspect hands and the only one we can count on to get consistent seperation is Ginn and he's getting old he wont be fast forever.

Cam is always trying to make a play thats why he holds onto the ball and does not throw the ball away...To me it seems he has too much confidence in his offensive line at times and receivers...but more so the receivers than anything...the scheme needs to change for what we have more route combos.

Did you watch the game? Did you see the graphics and review of Alex Smith how he got out every pass in 2.6 seconds or less in the first half leading to the 21 points? Did you see the one sack by Mack where he was at 2.6 seconds? Go back and watch our graphic of Remmers and Irvin's sack that Igo posted. You can count to 4 and you don't even see the snap. That was the only sack we allowed with a patchwork line before the 4th and 10 sack by Mack to end the game. Our patchwork OL played pretty well considering how long our pass plays take to develop. Watch the Vikings beating the Giants. The Giants lost by the same score as us but they got dominated yet Eli was never sacked. The announcers mentioned why he didn't get sacked because he threw the ball away every time he knew he was going to be sacked.

Yes some of that is on Newton but the play calling is awful and puts our OL in terrible positions. All deep routes where our OL have to block 1-2 seconds longer than what you saw out of the Chiefs OL. Is Kelce better than Olsen? Are Hill and banged up Maclin really better than Ginn, Benjamin and Funchess. They sure weren't when they were in Charlotte but damn it if they don't tailor the offense to protect Smith and try to avoid turnovers. Not what we do.

i feel bad that you typed all this, on a touchscreen no less, in response to carolina chuck.

good post though

e: and PSA time because it's an epidemic on this board - spend five minutes on wikipedia reading about the system that a coach/OC likes to run.  andy reid and his west coast system couldn't be any more different philosophically from what shula runs.  i'm not a football scholar or an expert on offense or anything but walsh => holmgren => reid spells it out pretty clearly.

He's actually been throwing the ball away A TON this season. Which is why is completion% has plummeted.

People are blaming the o-line is a cop out for how bad our receivers are. Opposing teams are literally going man to man against us on almost every play and our WR still can't get separation. Funchess and Benjamin run the slowest routes ever, I feel like it's 2014 all over again with Cotchery and Avant.

Exactly.  Doubling down on overgrown WRs with suspect hands was not what this team needed at all. And we knew it since Steve left, wtf were these guys thinking.   I don't think a qb in the league would have success in this system, on this team.

The argument was that Cam needed tall, rangy receivers because he threw high and inaccurately. May have been true years ago, but not anymore. Speed receivers probably play more into Shula's down field play calling.

Umm, have you been watching Cam? He's been winging them high all year. Right now, speed is good (it's hard for Cam to over throw Ginn on a go route) and catch radius is incredibly important. Cam's accuracy this season has been terrible, possibly the worst in his career.

Speedy guys who can run routes but are under say 6'2 " aren't going to get a chance on the field right now. Sure, Philly Brown, but he's been used for reverses as much as actual passes here of late.

No he hasn't. He's had moments, but so does every strong armed QB. The problem is when there isn't any type of separation, he puts it high so his tall receivers can make a play using their height. Ginn and Philly only occasionally get a high pass.

You're not going to get Cam to let the ball out in 2.6 sec. Just not going to happen. He's not that QB.

If you run all curls and digs he will. If the first read is a deep fly or 15-20 yard out, then no he'll stay on that route if he thinks it has a chance.

If you had been keeping up with the conversation over the past several years you would know Norman didn't play because he was undisciplined and didn't play where he was supposed and free lanced too much. This defense is very accountable on every play and he wasn't where he needed to be so he sat until he was ready to play Panthers ball not Norman ball. Similar issues kept Ealy on the sidelines as well.

I think it's clear which one of us has been keeping up the last few years seeing as to how you think this coaching staff is immediately making the right personnel decisions, and are great talent evaluators. For christ sake, this coaching staff was excited about Ryan Delaire this offseason.. have you seen him play?

BTW do you remember our drafts before Dave became GM? drafts which Rivera and his staff had a much larger say than they do now btw. Rivera was excited about McClain and Fua. Also Rivera seems to be the one that really liked Zack Sanchez this year. Look back at the 2011/2012 seasons and look at the horrible personnel that Rivera and his team fielded. It's not pretty. Keep up with the conversation.

Obviously you must be making up the conversation. I never said they always make the right decisions or are great talent evaluators. So the rest of your post is pretty irrelevant. Did Ron have more say in the draft under Hurney than he does now? I never heard he or anyone else say either way. Not only are you not keeping up you are making it up.
