Marty Hurney might be rehired as interim GM

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport believes ex-Panthers GM Marty Hurney could replace Dave Gettleman on an interim basis.

The Charlotte Observer's Joseph Person first floated the idea on Twitter, and Rapoport weighed in saying it's "definitely a consideration." If true, it's a ludicrous consideration. Hurney left the Panthers in salary cap hell, tying one hand behind Gettleman's back. Hurney's October 2012 firing was richly deserved. (Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams disagree.) Owner Jerry Richardson would be taking a time machine back to an era of football he needs to forget.

If it happens, then I'll have to spend my Sunday's doing other things and come back when JR dies.

After this year at least. This year's team is still DG's and will be unless Hurney comes in cutting/trading players left and right, which is unlikely. But pretty likely we'd have TD and Olsen taking up 15% of the cap over the next 5 years and Trai, Norwell, Star all gone.

    • The only action the Panthers should consider is if they are selling, but I doubt any other team would be buying. The only way we get markedly better is hitting it out of the park in the draft. We need a few of those Morgan-Jenkins-Smith drafts.
    • I am definitely a Zavala skeptic. I thought he had fixed his issues which were substantial his first year, he was as bad as you will ever see. (But I think I was mistaken) I don’t know what they should have done with Motion. That contract was so bad, it seemed like lose him or work an extension. I do t think they were ready to replace him.   My pint about depth is that we had some. That is mostly gone now too. And I was not a big supporter of giving 150 million to two guards. And you know why is was done, to prop up little man. The theme of the Panthers since they drafted him.
    • We gave a guy with knee issues a 2 year extension and had blown heavily in free agency on OGs with a known health issue at center. Unfortunately it's looking more worst case in those possibilities. Zavala is more worst case from the drafting side is all.
