Next Year's Backup Quarterback

Not unless the answer is Garrett Gilbert.

He's had his moments but is he ready to be a full time backup?  I'd be iffy on that idea.

He has another off season to get more comfortable and everyone on the offense will be making adjustments to NT including Cam.  I would say he is as good an option or better than any on your list and he is probably much more affordable than a lot of them.  I think he is already a better option than the guy we rolled with this year, but you know Rivera and his pet vets.  I am hoping NT takes control of the offense  and fills in his roster by merit rather than seniority.

see how the draft shakes out.  I wouldn't be opposed to using a mid round pick on guy if the right dude was there.  Carolina at the point where they need to look at some young talent IMO.

Cam is now a vet.  Bring in a young dude to learn the game.  Norv is a big film room guy.  Good time to break in a new guy and have him ride the bench.   Take a note from Belichick.  He always bringing in and working youngs guys at QB just in case.   Guys he hopes actually could be good.

I don't want a new DA

One of the things Norv Turner says that he loves the most about coaching is grooming a young quarterback from the beginning.

I agree it wouldn't be a bad idea to draft a youngster and start grooming him for the future. My question would be how high a pick would you be willing to use?

Realistically, we aren't going to get much going 4th round or later with QBs. Brady in the 6th is an exception, definitely not the rule. If we are planning to groom someone to back up Cam, 3rd is really about as high as I'm wanting to go for a backup. As I said before, I think it does need to be someone with a similar skill set as Cam.

For what it's worth, every team who has had Sanchez as a back-up raves about him in that role. They say he's a great leader, teacher, and coaching presence on the sideline.

Apparently he has a future in coaching if he so chooses.

I wouldn't be against bringing him in as a backup and drafting a dude with a late round pick.

Interesting take.

I've seen a couple of different articles that mention us drafting a QB, not only as a backup, but as Cam's future replacement. I mean, assume he'll play at least 6 or 7 more years. If we draft someone good enough to replace him, it doesn't seem likely that they'd still be on our roster by that time (though I know it's possible). Just seems like an odd take.

    • Just another 1st round QB that never paid off for the team that drafted them or traded for them. It's been like this since the SB began. 36 QBs have now won the SB & only 13 of them have been 1st rounders winning with their original team. Namath 1968, Griese 1972, Bradshaw 1974, McMahon 1985, Simms 1986, Aikman 1992, Elway 1997, Roethlisberger 2005, P.Manning 2006, E.Manning 2007, Rodgers 2010, Flacco 2012, & Mahomes 2019. Only 3 have taken longer than 5 seasons as the starter to win a SB.  4  6  5  4  6  4  15  2  9  4  3  5  2 [the years it takes for these 1st round QBs] 5  1  4  1  3  1  1  2  3  4  [10 of the 36 have won a chip with their 1st team that haven't been drafted in the 1st round. These are the years it took them as a starter] What stands out? Only 2 of these QBs have lost their first championship appearance. Elway took 4 years as a 1st rounder & Hurts took 2 years as a 2nd rounder. Of the 10 non-1st round QBs, 2 are 2nd rounders, 3 are 3rd rounders, 5 are 6th rounders or later. Please stop wasting time on drafting 1st round QBs with such a high failure rate. The remaining 13 QBs are traded or free agent signings. Stafford, Favre, Young, Williams and Dawson are the 5 trades. Peyton Manning & Tom Brady also won for teams as free agents on a short stay as well as being drafted. The lesson here is don't waste your franchise on farming up 1st rounders for the league, and steer clear of trading for a franchise QB. Stick to finding that championship QB by drafting them outside of the 1st round or through free agency.
    • I lost most of the respect I had for Fox in 2010. He should have resigned if he hated the job that much. Instead he stuck for his paycheck and let stuff go to hell.    I burned out on Ron too but my deal breaker issue with him was away from football and after he was gone from the Panthers. He may have been out of his depth but never quit on us.
    • From where they were one year ago to now, pretty incredible. I mean, say what you want about Vrabel he is no Jerrod Mayo.
