RR: Cockrell to push Bradberry for #1 CB

MHS831

Recommended Posts

This sounds as if we are OK going into the season with Bradberry, Cockrell, and Seymour, but a drafted CB is probably in the mix.  Interesting comments about competition--sounds like they got rid of Worley because he would not push Bradberry.

Thoughts that went through MHS' brain while reading this:

  • No mention of Gunter.
  • Boy, Worley would hate this.
  • Does this also bash Bradberry?
  • It is interesting that 65% of respondents to the survey are OK with the CB situation.
  • I wonder who invented jelly?

5 minutes ago, Camp Fodder said:

I think Cockrell was a good signing. If we go CB in the first 3 rounds I will feel good about the position

There is a feeling you get that there is a lot of resentment for Worley's antics here.  Less directly, I wonder if this is not also a message to Bradberry.  If we draft a CB, then there would be camp competition, for sure.

I think it's great.

Bradberry doesn't deserve to be a lock after last season.  The fact he may lose his job as top corner could push him to the next level.  Same with Cockrell if he sees that as an opportunity make a name for himself.

If we can get anything out of a rookie DE, Hall, Obada or Cox and Pep, Addison and Horton can replicate or build upon last year and if Poe is as advertised as an interior pass rusher (the aspect of his game that Star didn't have) then I honestly think we'll be in great shape defensively regardless of who is at CB. Cockrell is a really solid signing and I think could have a Kurt Coleman like impact but at corner. I hope we get an instant starter at S in the first 3 rounds too but I really think if we can get a pass rush that resembles 2013 then our secondary should be just fine with what we've got back there. Need Shaq to take that step forward into TD's 2013 role though. The 4 game suspension should allow him to take a stranglehold on that role and when TD comes back he can become a rotational guy like Blackburn was then. If CB is BPA early then great go for it and keep stacking the defense but if it doesn't turn out that way I still feel good about the group we have.

I can say that I have done a few mocks on Fanspeak and it is nearly impossible to resist taking a CB in the first 2 or 3 rounds.

Bradberry to go from the #1 CB to a dime back/depth CB is scary, but we would have a pretty dang impressive secondary if we add a S.

Thomas point was about pressure and I agree 100%, but we have to go into the draft as if we will not get much from Hall and Peppers with reduce his role a bit. That leaves Addison and Horton---aaaah.  We need a DE, but I don't see one in the draft (realistically) who can make an impact as a rookie

Is it just me or is there overreaction to Bradberry's 2017 play?

He turned in a pretty amazing rookie year and had a sophomore slump. He's still a really good corner, IMO and until I see another season like I did in 2017, I believe he is a potential CB1. I think our defense as a whole got exposed more last year than I can remember. Coleman was downright awful last year, Worley was Jekyll and Hyde and even guys like Luke and Shaq had moments of lapse. I think Wilks was to blame for a lot of it too.

I think Cockrell will push Bradberry and we will have two solid starting corners....something we have not had for awhile. It's kinda like our WR position.... we don't have a true WR1, but Funch is pretty close to it and as a whole our unit is solid.

    • There was some pretty egregious missed calls vs the Chiefs in the Lions game, especially Kelce. The completion where he clearly used the ground to catch the ball. The hold in front of the ref as Pacheco ran by where the defender was trying to turn around and couldnt because Kelce had him by the jersey. Mahomes openly taunting after scoring a TD. 0 penalties after double digit the week before. Cmon.
    • People get trade happy and look at resources as barter items. They fail to see them as resources to be used to our benefit rather than someone else's. Right now, Chuba and Rico are massive benefits to us and a strong rushing attack so greatly benefits any passer, much less a young one like Bryce still is.  And the better our running game, the more our offense can eat up the clock, the less time our defense is on the field. And that is priceless, too. Don't mess with the running game. Don't mess with the receivers. Maybe look at our O-line and think we may have hit on something good during these injuries. Look at our D-line and seem some strength evolving there. Our secondary has its good spots and some that are still developing. Our linebacking corps did well this last outing. Our special teams are on a major upswing as of this past week. Heck, even our QB is showing us a little something right now that we can build on. Perhaps putting out a yard sale sign right now might be less advantageous than looking at the team and saying, "You are all part of something good that is happening. We want to see that continue to grow."
