What grade would you give Marty Hurney for March?

I'm not big on grades (especially at this time of year) but I have thoughts.

Agreed with the decision to let Thomas Davis go. I know a lot of people didn't.

Agreed with dumping of Matt Kalil and Captain Munnerlyn. Doubt anybody disagreed on those.

Like the signing of Matt Paradis and the re-signing of Darryl Williams.

Concerns?

I do worry a little that we seem to have a lot of important people who are either older or recently injured. Those are the kinds of things that can come back to bite you in the latter half of the season.

The cap, obviously. Whatever "the plan" is, for the love of all that's holy, please don't start restructuring and kicking the can down the road again.

On that topic, I know a lot of people still want to defend the Torrey Smith decision, but five million for a guy who is your 6th or 7th receiving option is just dumb.

Still concerned about three crucial backups, quarterback and runningback being the obvious ones. The other I haven't seen talked about much. I'm desperately hoping for somebody to tell me that we're not going into next season without "insurance" for Graham Gano again.

Two of those three spots are needs because our leadership did something stupid in the past. They have a penchant for that, which also makes me cringe.

Bottom Line: I've said it before. We really really need to nail this draft.

Anyone still dinging Hurney over keeping Torrey Smith is clearly not paying attention.

1.  The Carolina Panthers spend less money at the WR position than practically any other team in the league.  In fact, only four teams spend less than we do.  As a position group, we're extremely prudent.

2.  What FA's were as good or better and available for less money?  Who could he have signed?  I can't think of a single one.

3.  Smith is *still* on a one year deal.  He can *still* be cut at any point we find someone better for less, or a rookie / PS player steps up and takes that position.

Keeping Torrey at this point is *clearly* the right move.

Hurney this offseason:  A.

Just like most pundits graded him he gets an A.  Keeping Torrey was smart given he has no guaranteed money and is really here to provide stability and leadership. Sure he didn't have a good last year but there is a reason we changed wide receiver coaches. Coupled with a lack of deep ball, what do you expect. Sure I want to sign Love but folks haven't exactly been banging down his door. Seems we will wait until after the draft and then perhaps make a move. Hurney is showing the patience folks criticized him for not exercising in the past. Honestly he did better than I expected and did a great job with little money. Anyone downgrading him is still a long term Hurney critic who is only begrudgingly giving him credit now.

Actually still give him good grades since he covered himself. Williams only counts 6 million against the cap and is on a prove it deal. If he plays at all it will have been worth the risk. Paradis is on a 3 year deal but his cap this year is only 3 million. So again if he doesn't play we aren't out much and if he does he is a real bargain. Not only did Hurney sign potentially great players but mitigated their effect if it takes longer to recover than expected.

Numbers 2 and 3 are good points.  We can cut Smith at regain cap space if required.

Number one is irrelevant.  We spend less because Wright was cheap and Samuels and DJ are on their rookie contracts.  Its not a plan on our part, just the way it worked out.  The question is not how much we spend on WR's but (if we do end up keeping Smith), was Smith a wise expenditure.  Or would we have been better off spending the money elsewhere?  We won't know for certain until the end of the season, but it just seems that 5 million a year is to much to pay for a guy who is probably going to be our fourth receiver.

I also worry that he will take snaps from some of the younger guys.

    • Then don't tune in. It's really not a hard concept to understand, if your making your decision based on your own personal needs/feelings as opposed to what is best for the future of the franchise, then it's a you problem, not a Panthers problem. When the season is already lost, every fan should be rooting for the same thing.  The team plays hard until the final whistle of the season and keeps improving as a team and individually, but in the end, we still come up short and lose games, and preferably because the other team beat us, not because we screwed up and found a way to lose due to our own fault. Look at it this way... If we are up 1 or 2 points with 3 seconds left in the game and the other team is lining up for a FG.  Beyond the joy of victory or the disappointment of defeat, what impact does the other team making or missing the FG have on our team the following season? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING Except where we draft and what teams we play due to our finish in the division. The players and coaches on the team would have the exact same level of improvement and learnings about themselves individually and as a team whether the FG is made or missed.  The ONLY difference in the end is the record in the standings and if the win or loss number changes. If you want to argue if making the playoffs to lose in the first round or just missing them is better or worse, that's totally fair and I can at least understand the other side of it.  But in what is already a lost season, if you're not hoping your team plays well but ends up losing, then you're cutting off your nose to spite your face.  You're hoping for a moment of happiness at the detriment of the franchise's future, and in turn, you're basically then happy for a moment to only set yourself up for future further disappointment.
    • If we’re eliminated I want the wins more.   The season is already a disappointment and if I’m not pulling for wins why bother to tune in?
    • Two things terribly wrong with this post. First is that not one time has myself or anyone else agreeing with me said that the team themselves should think that way or try and lose for positioning.  Never once have I suggested the team should purposefully lose games, ever.  I honestly can't understand why people keep saying this in posts, not one fan has ever said the players should or would purposefully try to lose. And second, is yes, that has happened and it's happened very recently.  The 2020 Bengals were 4-11-1 and then were playing in the SB the very next season.   And while it might have been 2 years later and they didn't quite get to the SB, the 2021 Lions were 3-13-1 and then the 2023 Lions were up 24-7 at halftime of the NFC Championship game. The season between those two? They finished 9-8 and only just missed the playoffs. Which is why I keep trying to compare us to the Lions in where we are at in our re-build.  Throw out Bryce's rookie year with the Reich staff who just didn't work out and he looked god awful.   This past season when we were 5-12 in Canales' 1st season is that 2021 season for the Lions and their 1st season under Campbell.  This year is their 2022 where they grew a ton and Campbell's culture building was clear, where I'm saying we'd likely be better off in the long run if we go 8-9 or 9-8 and just miss out on the playoffs (which is still a significant improvement from last year).  Then our 2026 is their 2024 when we have a chance to be a real contender after adding a few more pieces and our key players having another year of experience under their belts.
