Noticing a trend??

WOW!!

I think there is still a good chance both Cox and Obada are on the 53 man roster.

Last year on the final 53-man roster there were 10 defensive lineman and 6 linebackers (16 total).

With the move to 3-4, let's suppose for argument sake they keep 8 defensive lineman and 8 linebackers (4 ILB's and 4 OLB's)

Let's start with the linebackers: 4 ILB's (Luke Kuechly, Shaq Thompson, Andre Smith, Jermaine Carter, Jr.)

4 OLB's/EDGE (Bruce Irvin, Brian Burns, Christian Miller, Marquis Haynes)

That still leaves 8 Defensive Lineman: (EDGE: Mario Addison, Bryan Cox, Jr., Efe Obada, & INTERIOR: Gerald McCoy, Kawaan Short, Dontari Poe, Vernon Butler, and Kyle Love)

Of course there is some grey area b/c any of the outside EDGE guys could theoretically line up as a down lineman or in a 2 point rushing stance.  Regardless, that still is only 16 total roster spots.

We are still going to need guys to play in the 4 man fronts, so I still think there is a place for all these guys. Burns & Miller are rookies, and Haynes is basically a red-shirt rookie.  Obada and Cox both have had significant game experience.  Without them, our only EDGE guys with any real NFL experience are Addison and Irvin.  That would be concerning IMO.

Now, I think there is obviously going to be some EDGE guys that are inactive on gameday, and that may also be a reflection of whether Rivera wants to use more 4 man fronts against a certain opponent.

Regardless, this is a much better situation to be in than what the defensive line looked like in January.  I am excited about both the potential and depth of this group.

I think Cox stays if it's between the two of them. Gonna be some stiff competition. Gonna really get the blood flowing. Hardest camp battle to date. Cox really wants to be a member of the Carolina Panthers.

Both of these men need to show penetration, deep penetration.

Get a wire on the coachs but I can’t see either making the team.

You forgot Norris? He will take a spot because of economy.

So i think Cox/Obada/Haynes/Andre Smith/Carter will be cutted one,at least.That's painful.

Hope Hurney 2.0 can make a trade instead of cut, while trade for a FS,that's dreaming.:crying:

They will have to either BULK or slim down to be a Jack.

I suspect that is already what is happening as coaches told players how they are fitting into the new defense. What isn"t clear is what will happen when the bullets start to fly. I think we won't know some pieces of the puzzle until we see them play the opener. The preseason might be vanilla and reveal little.

Best part of the 3-4 is the ability to mask what you are doing. The last 5 year's our div knew what was coming. My biggest concern is sealing off the run at this point.

Didn’t Irvin comment about how he was impressed with Cox and was looking forward to helping him improve?

Yes, Irvin made some comments shortly after being signed about liking Cox quite a bit.

Not that there is anything wrong with that.

I think McCoy and Short will be very important to closing the gaps.

    • Like many of the old heads, I’ve been here for a long time.  I got a lot of respect for everyone on this board for your dedication to this team.  We’ve all been through it during the tougher years. At this point in life, I’m not one to judge anyone’s level of dedication, or their reasons why anymore.  Time, and a lot of bad football, will do that.  For me, it’s simple.  We share a common bond.  For that, I love and appreciate all of you crazy SOB’s. For me, last season was at a minimum, entertaining.  BY lead a young team to multiple come from behind 4th qtr wins.  That showed me heart, and that he has the clutch gene.  That’s the wildcard intangible.  For me, that was fun to watch even  if it was mindbogglingly frustrating at times.  Over the past two seasons, we have progressively built a better team around him.  On paper, the defense should be better this season.  That’ll help.  Let’s see what he can do as the other guys continue to develop too.  Besides, his contract is cheap for a few more years, and we just made some smart cap decisions during the draft. Let’s see how it shakes out.
    • Hiring Shula & his Cam save us playbook.
    • I would very much liked to have seen Jake Delhomme's career if Tommy Jone no hurt Jake.  I just know that roster and the leadership were destined to hit paydirt but Jake was never the same after the elbow injury, and unfortunately he was the sole reason they didn't make it back to the big one.  I think that 08 team was the best in the league, and Jake masked his inability well all season til the Arizona game put it all on display.  I'll go back to the season prior even and say the 07 team was primed to be a competitor.  Jake was off to a fantastic start that year (for a Panthers QB).  They may have been a championship caliber club for a few seasons after 08 too.
