Would McCown be a better option than what we have now?

As much as I don't think Heinicke is an NFL talent, I think he might deserve #2 reps this week. Allen and Grier looked like straight trash against Buffalo. Maybe Heinicke would have too had he actually played against guys who are likely to be in their roster come the regular season.

Eagles signed Josh McCown, think it was around 2-3 million. Panthers could’ve easily signed him and had a veteran presence at back-up qb... is he a better option than what we have

Derek Anderson would be better than what we have now, and would've been last season. But the Panthers determined it was time to focus on development, likely in the Patriots model. Inexplicably, they've been able to turn back-up QB's into draft capital and the Panthers may be trying to go down that same road. The days of veteran back-ups may be behind us as teams seek to utilize more of their time spent on back-up QB's as development which can in turn be transformed into future draft picks.

If Cam goes down I want our young guys to gain experience. I don’t think McCown is going to offer much at this point in his career.

Yeah, if Cam's shoulder fails to hold up again we need to figure out what we currently have for the future and whether or not we need to try to sign a legit FA next off-season or draft a QB in the 1st (or swing a trade).

We're not making a SB run with Josh McCown.

It’s too late now. Signing a decent vet backup QB should have been done before the draft. We already wasted a quality pick on a QB that will probably never start a game without an injury. And if things go bad, we are probably taking one in the 1st next year anyhow.

Unless you are the rare NFL team that miraculously has two NFL QB's on it's roster (I'm looking at you 2017 Eagles) then it doesn't matter a bit who your backup QB is.  The best you can hope for is that your backup can fill in for a few plays here and there.  A half.  Maybe a game or two.  After that, you're just plain sunk.

Past that, you might as well have some young guys and find out what they have or don't have.  There are NFL teams out there without a single NFL starting caliber QB on the roster.  We're lucky to have one.

Grier hasn’t outperformed anybody. In Spartanburg, or in the games. So this is actually not a bad idea.

You mean bring in a vet to sit back and help groom a young guy on roster in Allen while also being a capable backup?

Vs

Drafting a guy who is a year older and similar upside as the guy already on roster instead of using the pick on someone at a different postition that could possibly come right in and help right away

This team isn't going to the postseason without Cam Newton. Playing musical chairs with the backup QB position isn't going to change that.

Exactly.  I certainly don't feel as good as I was hoping to be with either Allen or Grier, but the reality hasn't changed that this season is going to hinge on how well Cam plays and how well his shoulder holds up (and I'm expecting a large correlation between those two)

    • fuging Christ dude this isnt hard.  Like at all.  I get you simping for this poo team is your thing but sometimes you have to look at reality.   Even removing his bum knee from the equation, none of this made sense.  He is 31.  He has been paid handsomely for his service here.  He was currently under contract for this season.  Why in the holy fug did anything have to be done 2 weeks before the season started.   The people for this move, in this thread are saying A) He deserved it (this is the nfl it doesnt work like that  B) It frees up cap space (then why in the fug didnt we do this in Feb or C) You logic (We are getting a deal at 53 million guaranteed for the next 3 years.   You realize with this deal we cannot cut or trade his ass for 3 years.  You understand this right?   So in my opinion we should have let this ride into the offseason and go from there, what he is going to threaten to walk, big fuging deal he would be 32 on a chronically bad knee, what other moronic franchise is going to give him 40 million up front?  It wasnt going to happen.   And you are acting like its impossible to replace a 32 year old RT with a bum knee.  Just go and draft someone, move Icky to RT.  There are tons of options instead of extending this dude 2 weeks before the fuging season.  The truth is Morgan and the shitheads in the FO fell for this dudes crying act and got all sentimental and shelled out another ext.  We are a poverty ass franchise that doesnt act professionally
    • Amazing what the prospect of being traded to Carolina will do for contract negotiations.
    • 5 Im glad football is back but after the embarrassment that was the browns pre season game where our starting D made Sanders look like a serviceable NFL QB, I lost hope again for a successful Panthers campaign this year.  I do hope I’m wrong!
