Panthers uneasy with Gano

Yep. Sucks that we blew it already. I still can’t understand the reasoning after that shitty 2016 to decide to keep Gano and pay him $14M more than Butker over 4 years. That salary cap savings alone was what made up my mind even ignoring the shot show of 2016 and how that missed FG at Denver kept that monkey on our back all year.

If only someone could have seen this coming....oh, wait.......uh....

Cam isn't the only player the Panthers have that could convert fourth downs. With McCaffrey in the backfield, the Panthers have the option to direct-snap to him, as well. He has thrown a TD, so we know he can pass.

In other words, the Panthers should be MUCH better with 4th down conversions.

Like I said in the other thread, I think the situation is playing out where we carry two kickers on the very first 53 and then immediately IR Gano with designation to return.  Slye does well, Gano stays on IR.  Slye crashes and burns, we bring Gano back when he's healthy and cut Slye.

If Slye does really well for the entire season, we then cut Gano next spring.

whew that plus keeping 3 QBs is going to mean two quality players see the axe for sure

Options and ramifications:

1) Keep Slye, IR Gano

Seemingly the most logical approach at this point, though it doesn't sound like Gano is all that happy about the prospect. The downside is that if you do this and Gano gets healthy mid-season, you have to face this same dilemma all over again.

2) Keep Gano, practice squad Slye

This would basically amount to put in full trust in Gano because it's hard to believe some kicker-needy team wouldn't poach Slye.

3) Keep Slye, cut Gano

There are an awful lot of people who would probably favor or at least accept this approach right now, but I'm not so sure Ron Rivera is one of them. Plus if Slye then tanks, look out.

4) Gano/Butker Redux

Keep both kickers on roster and gamble that someone will offer a decent trade for one of them. At heart, this is also an endorsement of Gano because it's highly unlikely another team is going to choose to trade for him rather than Slye.

Meltdown Potential: Options two and four would likely induce fan meltdowns immediately. Option one potentially could depending on what decision were made mid-season, and option three is guaranteed if Slye looks bad.

Trade Gano/keep Slye

At around 2M(and no guaranteed money), Gano isn’t a bad buy for a PK needy team. If he will play.

But this is getting into Kalil territory where it might be time to move on. It won’t cost us anything this year. 3.1M next. But it would still be 3.1M if we kept him so cutting the cord is becoming a likelier option.

Unless there is a lot more information about Gano being kept in the dark, option 1 looks like the best route. 4 has proven to be a dead end with little potential payout anyways, 3 is just too risky unless when you have option 1 and option 2 would end up with someone giving Sly a shot after this preseason so he isn't going to make it to the practice squad.

Yes very concerned about gano

but we haven’t botched it, as we do have a kicker

We botched it when we cut Butker and signed Gano to a ridiculous contract comparable to his success. If Gano didn’t have all that guaranteed money stick to him, this wouldn’t even be a discussion.
