The Kyle Bashing Needs To Stop

When Cam got hurt in the preseason, many of us Panther fans were worried that Cam would never be what he once was. When he came out the first 2 games and continued to look injured and play poorly we had visions of last season, and thought all hope was lost for this season.  I mean, why wouldn't we think that? Cam has been that guy since day 1, the guy we could count on to carry this team.  The thought of going forward without Cam was scary, and who did we have behind him?  Kyle Allen, a guy who we have seen 1 regular season game where he looked good and 2 preseasons worth of bad tape, a guy who was an UDFA and was cut from the team last year.  This season was sure to be lost.

Then comes the Arizona game and Allen plays very well, there is hope.  He continues to win 3 more games and put us in playoff contention.  And what does a portion of the fan base do?  Tear him down, analyze every deficiency, and try to calm any excitement others may have for him.  Then he loses a game and looks bad in the process, it felt like these same people were excited about it and happy.  This made no sense to me. I understand, we have all been carrying our shield for Cam and defending him since day 1, many felt like they still needed to do that now.  Yes the Cam bashers came out of the woodwork and touted Kyle as Cams replacement, many said he was better.  But, that is expected, that is what we have had to defend against the entire time Cam has been here.  We were supposed to be better than that, we were supposed to not be like that faction of the fan base.  Instead many acted just like that portion of the fan base, but towards Kyle Allen, an UDFA back up QB whose job is to win a few games while our starter gets healthy.  He has done that, he has done everything that has been asked of him.  He is 4-1.

Is he doing everything that is expected from a backup QB? Yes.  Is he better than most of us expected? Yes.  Is there reason to be excited about it?  Yes.  Is he the future at QB for the Carolina Panthers? I don't know, but it doesn't matter.  Right now I'm all in on Kyle Allen and any win he gets is a positive.

Well said! And we can like both Kyle and Cam and cheer for them both.

What Kyle came in and did was just frikkin' amazing and way beyond any fan's expectations. Sheesh, if you can't get behind that, you need to check your agendas. He's one of your team's guys and he was just killing it out there.

And then came the San Fran game. They're a darned good team and our pretty good team had a horrible day across the board. Kyle's part was no worse than anyone else's and better than quite a few.

Either way, the Kid is still 4-1 on this season and if we were sitting at week 5 like that, we'd all be cheering our fool heads off.

Cam will either heal up or he won't, and there's not a thing any of us can do about it except say a prayer or two for the guy along the way. In the meantime, there's an undrafted back-up QB kid out there who is outperforming a crap-ton of first round picks and entrenched starting QBs. When he came in for week 3 I said to get us anywhere, Kyle was going to have to "Jake Delhomme the sh!t out of this" to make it.

He's amazingly done just that. I hope he can keep doing it for as long as we need him to, whether it's just a couple more weeks or a few more seasons.

Let's cheer for the Kid AND hope Cam heals up. If you can't do that, just GTFO and find some other team.

There are people here who have never played football at any competitive level, so they don't understand team dynamics in football, much less the game itself from an X's and O's standpoint. They rely on numbers alone and generally have no clue what the hell they're talking about. Don't listen to them.

The tape has been evident on Allen. He's not a world beater, but he's a solid player who is going to keep you out of trouble more often than not. Last week, I said it to a buddy that Allen was just pressing. He didn't look the same. I don't think he got flustered too badly by SF, but he certainly got in his own head and was trying to make something happen, even if it wasn't there (sorta like Cam has done several times, but don't let the Cam fans hear that).

Cam is likely done. He'll have to come out and prove next season that he's worth top QB money. And if we somehow make the playoffs with Allen at QB and even win a playoff game, Cam may not get that chance here. And before anybody says that that is ridiculous, everybody swore Cam was close to getting back on the field and we now know that Cam hasn't been recovering well.

Are you referring to here on the huddle or social media in general?

I'm sure there are undoubtedly some idiots on twitter bashing Allen, but that's pretty much all twitter is these days.

As far as the huddle, where are these people at?

I don't see mouth breathers showing up here in droves with fresh accounts to gloat that KA led a team that got their asses kicked from top to bottom. I cannot say the same for #1. At any given time there are multiple accounts littering negative takes about him. It speaks for itself.

It's mostly just the Cam Nut Huggers who will follow him to another team once he's gone. I remember a time when Newton was drafted and he got bashed constantly. Now it's Kyle's turn and just like Newton he will develop into a good QB.

I think this is a matter of perspective given the trolling that was going on in the last couple weeks gameday threads. It was pretty awful.  There have besn threads dunking on Allen and plenty of very negative posts about him.  There are also multiple posters suggesting we have a firesale since Allen sucks so bad (... yeah i know, trade deadline...).

But... Cam definitely has more polarized fans, including the (thankfully small minority of) crazy conspiracy theorists here.  Like real crazy anti Cam folks, heh.

Kyle bashing only came about because so many people were giddy over the chance to kick Cam to the curb the minute we found a competent backup. He is a great fill-in and I’m thankful for him, but it’s frankly embarrassing how badly many Panthers fans want a new QB.

I have no problem with anybody criticizing bad play if they know what they're talking about.

The most vocal people I've seen criticizing Kyle Allen have been people that I wouldn't trust to pass Football 101. Worse than that, I don't really think it matters to them.

You want to have an opinion? At least have the decency to have a basic working knowledge of what you're talkin about.

sorry people set up the bashing themselves by calling him a franchise QB because he completed 1 pass over 20 yards through his first 3 games. you (as in the general huddle) can't set the expectations yourself and then get mad when people react to the expectations you set not being met.

Things like that will happen on Twitter. I think a lot of it is people are afraid. I get that. This is an unusual situation. This franchise hasn’t really been through a quarterback issue of this magnitude, ever. We’ve talked about Kerry Collins and Steve B and the Jake/Rodney deal. This is a much bigger deal, and it comes in the digital age.

I kinda doubt there as many people in that camp as you think.

The vast majority of the fanbase doesn't care who's playing as long as we win.

If you translate that to mean the people want to get rid of Newton, or translate any praise of Allen or questions about Newton to mean the same, you're creating enemies that aren't there.
