Let's say Grier looks pretty good these last two games

Depends on how good he looks, I think from a certain level you already know what he isn't, and that is a franchise QB.

Exactly, if he looks great, keep him, sign a vet qb next year for him to learn under and eventually take over. But at the same time, we can't keep throwing inexperienced QBs out behind this o-line, they start seeing ghosts and it messes up their timing and their reads. I want to see him play in some meaningful games, but don't wanna damage him long term.

Based on what?  his draft position?

I'm not saying he is a franchise QB, but the problem with QBs is they time to evaluate.

If he was a top 5 pick we would make excuses for him.  "a lot of QBs struggle their first year", "not going to start him as a rookie, we'll bring him along slowly", "a lot of QBs struggle in preseason, especially as rookies".

But...since he wasn't a first round pick everyone is convinced he has some low ceiling.  Honestly to get a true idea of a QBs potential they need 1-2 years in a system.  Problem is that no fan wants to waste 2 years and then be wrong.

I really hope we don't turn into one of those teams that ends up wasting draft capital and cap space every year to find a QB.

We used a 3rd on him last year, mind as well see what he has.  Bring in a cheap vet and let them compete for the starting job next year.  If he plays great, that's good, if not you get some good draft picks the following year.

Of course if a perfect situation develops, Tau falls to 10th because of his injury, you would be crazy not to consider that, but I wouldn't go out and spend a lot of draft capital to move up.  Likewise what is the point of drafting another mid round guy, then are basically just wasting last years pick.  Even if you find a QB you might be adding him to a bad team.  I would prefer to build the team and add the QB later.

Not unless he goes the Aaron Rogers route.  Sit, learn, develop and play when he's NFL starting caliber ready.  I'm not saying Grier will couldn't be good down the road, he's simply no where ready now. People must have amnesia because he looked bad, no...absolutely atrocious in preseason.

I don't hold much stock in the preseason games. Either way, I am not going to be ready to anoint him anything after just two games. If he shows some elite ability, perhaps worth further evaluation.

Agreed, but the million dollar question is it Cam or a journeyman FA vet?  I seriously doubt it's both.  In the slim chance that occurs, Grier isn't fighting for a backup role, he's fighting just to land a roster spot.

If Grier looks bad, and Cam is back, I expect that we will  bring in a journeyman FA vet and Allen and Grier will battle in camp for the 3rd QB spot on the roster.

This same thing may happen if we draft a QB and keep Cam, versus a journeyman FA... a possibility given we won't know Cam's status during the draft, and if the BPA is a QB I am sure we pull the trigger...

Why does Grier have to light it up.  We know that the team will let Allen walk since he is a FA at the end of the year.  Grier will be #2 unless they bring in a journey man off the street.  They still might do that to see if Grier developed during the off season if not he can be #3 again to gain more practice time.  This is if Cam comes back.  Maybe Allen ask to be sat.  Why get injured playing for a team that doesn't want you.  He isn't getting anymore money.  We just got into the top 10 and you want to win now.
