Wade Phillips released by the Rams

I have great respect for Wade, and his game-planning ability, and consider him to be a great potential DC for us.

But isn't the normal order of things to hire the HC first, then have him contribute to the coordinator choices?

That said, Tepper's business background leads me to believe he'll make the decisions this week.  We surely don't know for sure which parameters he'll use to make his choice, but he won't temporize about it.  McCarthy sure wasn't his guy; after the interviews this week, we'll know who is.  Hoping Wade is still around then.

Pretty sure Tepper isn’t hiring a DC before he hires a HC.. of course I could be wrong, we’re signing players which makes zero sense.

Not impressed by Wade. His teams average giving up mid 20’s in points, puts them middle of the pack. Dude had a lot of talent on the Rams team and still struggled.

I like the idea of Wade Phillips as the new DC a lot. one of the things that I think is possibly underappreciated about him is his ability to develop lower-round draft picks and reclamation projects (via trade) into contributors on defense.

sure he had a lot of studs in LA, but he also had these players as starters:

Cory Littleton (UDFA under Jeff Fisher regime)

Sebastian Joseph-Day (6th round pick)

Troy Reeder (UDFA)

Troy Hill (UDFA, journeyman signed by Jeff Fisher regime)

not to mention Samson Ebukam as a key contributor, who was a 4th round pick.

and you can go back to giving Malik Jackson, Danny Trevathan, and Bradley Roby career years in his two seasons in Denver. or being JJ Watt's first coordinator in Houston (though his ability coaching up 1st round picks isn't really my point here).

speaking of my point, it's this: having an ability to mold mid/late round draft picks, UDFAs, and low-stakes trade targets into key players who get a lot of snaps is what helps you rebuild a defense on the fly. which is an ideal fit for a first-time offense-minded head coach. I hope he has a nice impression of Charlotte, and that Tepper/whoever hot shot he hires feel like ponying up for him.

Good point. This would mean that the HC needs to be onboard with the idea too. Imagine trying this under Ron, and it simply wouldn't work because of his preference of vets above rookies. Also, there needs to be someone who can identify and supply the talent from later rounds in the draft, whom, frankly, I don't think we have. In that case, input from Wade on which and what kind of players he wants would help.
