You're correct. I wasn't commenting on the article so much as the Hurney-bashing over things that are out of his control. It's past time for him to be gone, but he can't control injuries, especially regarding guys who had no issues in college.

I still don't understand why Jordan Scarlett disappeared after a promising preseason.

For me, Hurney has always lacked the vision for team building.

Here's my take on the draft.

Burns - Drafted to play in the 3-4 with our coach on the hot seat, who could be gone at the end of the year. Seems to be a very risky pick if the team does poorly and Rivera is canned.

Little - Guy that was sliding down the draft boards. Traded up giving away our 3rd with a desperate need for interior linemen in a deep IL draft. 2 concussions and FF to 2020 and there's talk of taking a tackle at 7 to solidify the position and moving Little to guard. If that happens, on par with the Edwards trade, IMO.

Grier - Why oh why did we take him? This pick was telegraphed for a month. Everyone knew we were taking him in the 3rd. Again, we had pressing needs that needed to be addressed and we take a flier on a backup because the Turners, who would be out the door with Rivera if the team tanked, had a chubby for this guy. If no other team is salivating over him like you are, maybe it's time to reevaluate your own analysis.

4th and later - I consider these flier picks, great if you get someone but not overly expecting a lot

Christian Miller - I was really hoping for Chauncey Gardner-Johnson here. Huge position of need for us and was right there for the taking. Missed opportunities. Again, we draft a guy to play in a 3-4 that we may or may not be playing next year depending on Rivera's success.

Jordan Scarlett - made sense, but as Rivera has shown, spending a pick on a RB is pointless, because he's never going to see the field with CMC starting. UDFA would have resulted in the same thing.

Dennis Daley - 6th round tackle who shows some promise. Too soon to tell, but if he can provide depth and start a few here and there, this could be the best pick of the draft.

Terry Godwin - 7th rounder. Didn't really expect much here, but given the talent we had at WR, he could have made the team, even at PR.

My overall grade on this draft, very poor. There is little planning for the future in this draft. It looks like trying to grab a couple key pieces (Burns and Little) to make a playoff run, and hoping the stars align and end up in the SB. IF they don't, you have set yourself up for future failure. IMO, Paradis and Williams were huge question marks coming off leg injuries. I'm a big guy that's had leg injuries. They don't feel the same even after they heal. Little getting the concussion didn't help at all, but having your backup plan at tackle being a 6th round rookie or DW is crazy. We all saw DW in the preseason. He had no business starting anywhere on this line.

This team's foundation was flimsy at best. One piece gets knocked out and the whole thing comes toppling down. This is why so many of us complain about him not being able to build a team. Sure he gets a few home run draft picks, but he can't build around them in any manner for long term success. It's a big part of why we've never had back to back winning seasons. This draft feels like the typical Hurney season, home run swing resulting in a dribbler to short.

Building a team requires being able to know your team weaknesses and the drafts strengths and get those pieces to build long term (I consider 4 years long term in the NFL) success. Also, you have to know your coach's tendencies, the Scarlett pick and DW starting LT (fugging ridiculous BS a blind man could see). This past year was interior linemen and safety on the 2nd day, early 3rd, all areas of need for us. You can't just swing for the fences every time and expect to be successful long term. Sure you get a hold of one every now and then, but in the long run, it's not a winning strategy.

It's too early to write off the 2019 draft class, but it's definitely not too early to write off Marty Hurney as an NFL GM. If he stays in that role then I hope beyond hope that he proves me wrong, but there's a metric poo ton of data that says he likely won't.

I'm not writing off the draft class at all. I'm really addressing how the draft didn't make a lot of sense, given what many of us were discussing prior to the draft.

To be fair to old Hurn dog, Burns looked legit before his temper tantrum injury, Miller looked good too when he saw the field, and it's hard to find even a backup level Tackle in the 6th round and Daley looked okay at times and can fill in at Guard.

Hurney has always been horrible rounds 2-4 so nothing new there.

This has been my issue with him for SO long.  Those rounds are where you get the very best value, yet we continue to squander those picks with him in the drivers seat.

Sad.

Good post.

This is my take as well, and if you have paid attention to him over the years, it's his biggest flaw.  He ALWAYS thinks we are a piece or two away from a miracle playoff run.  Most people could look at this roster before the season started last season and could have predicted exactly what happened, Marty simply can't.
