The case for a lineman at #7

Our D allowed an average of 5.2 yards per carry this season. That's dead last in the NFL.

Our OL allowed 58 sacks this season. That's tied for dead last in the NFL.

Barring a really crazy first six picks, there is going to be a lineman there worthy of the selection. Draft him. Don't even hesitate.

I am hoping for Thomas because he appears to have the talent to lock down the LT position for a decade. This draft has to be a home run because we're already in bad shape, so to whiff at the 7th pick would be devastating. Whomever we select needs to be an impact player for many seasons to come.

I really want to give Greg Little a chance to play and develop in what will mist likely be a rebuilding year anyway.

draft a DT.  its devoid if talent AND potential

He can develop on the inside or right side.  I dont want my left tackle to be a "project" that needs time to "develop".  Draft a plug and play this year.  Its an unusually deep draft for LT's.

Thomas is being ranked anywhere from 4 to 25 as far as value.  Brown is being ranked from 2-10.  Consistently, the DT is ranked as a better value.  But, this is late Jan.  It will continually morph over the next 3 months.  Also, Thomas ranked from 1st to 3rd in OT rankings alone, and nobody is close to Brown in DT rankings.

I'm hugely in favor of giving rebuilding the O line top priority, so Thomas if available at 7 would also be my preference. Having said that, I do think first round picks are too valuable and BPA is overall the smart way to approach it. If after the combine, no one OT seems worthy of pick 7 and a prospect like Brown or Okudah are available, I wouldn't shed any tears over them either.  Franchise LT is the second hardest thing to get after franchise qb, but a rebuilding franchise should never reach for need in the first.

OL

This is the strongest projected OT class in years, especially at the top.

Doesnt matter who the QB is you wanting to fix this

- bring back Cam?  Do you want more of the same, him being killed and knocked out the first few games?

- Tank for Trevor or another young QB?  Do you want him to be David Carr'd and get killed.  Destroying him early/killing all confidence?

Get the OT.

Plus, there will be solid DTs around with our 2nd pick.  Its like the OT class last year where 2 went rd 1 then a bunch of guys who people had rd 1 gradea fell into the 2nd

Yep if you look historically in the draft there are way more talented Dlineman that come out then franchise LT's.  This year there is a smorgasbord of them and it lines up with our immediate need.  With that said I bet hurney picks a running back

There's at least 4 or 5 really good top shelf OTs in this draft, get one of them (Andrew Thomas, Jedrick Wills, Mekhi Becton, Tristan Wirfs, Austin Jackson). There doesn't seem to be a consensus #1 OL player so I'm guessing the combine will sort that out.

If Marty really wants a DT that bad we already have a high 2nd rounder. Just trade another later pick to move up a little in the 2nd and probably get a 1st round talent DT as well.

They said the same thing about last years OT class.. Let's please stop the hyperbolic comments using in making points..

If the defensive player is ranked higher you get him.. No need to draft for needs when you have so many needs.. Draft best player available (using position value) no matter the position..

Who said that?

A few people like certain people at ESPN who said theyd retire if Jimmy Clausen didnt become a star.

Last years class was known to have the 1 Stud out of Bama

1 high upside Project who was going to go around later 1st.  And some overall Solid that you saw fall to the 2nd

He11 the consensus even last year across the board from everyone was, If Andrew Thomas was able to come out last year.  He wouldve been the #1 OT and top 5 as a Sophomore..................He is currently #2, 3, or 4 OT on most boards currently.  And its not because of him, but because of Others.

He11 Wirfs, the #3-4 OT in the class, 90 % of the people have said he is better than any OT in last years class.  Not just right now, but Last Summer immediately after the last draft.
