Ron says don't bet against Cam Newton

Rivera, who is now the Washington Redskins' coach, said on 670 The Score that he believes the coronavirus pandemic, which prevented teams from conducting in-person workouts, was the main reason more teams didn't try to sign Newton. As for why Rivera didn't try to bring Newton to Washington, the coach pointed to the presence of quarterback Dwayne Haskins, drafted by the Redskins in the first round last year.

"Honestly, if the circumstances would have allowed us, I would have had no issues with that. I would have been very confident and comfortable in going after him and bringing him to be part of what we're doing here. To me, those circumstances would have been going through an opportunity to see what we have in Dwayne," Rivera said.

 

"We've been in this tough situation because there was a number of veteran guys that we liked, but we have to find out what we have in the young guy, and that's the benefit of being a new head coach is that we can go ahead and we can be patient," Rivera said. "We can put these guys through workouts and get to know what we have and feel good about it or don't feel good about it, and then we've got to go out and make some changes.

"But until we get that opportunity to know what we have, it would have been very hard to bring in a guy who's had such a solid career, who was league MVP at one time [in 2015], and expect the young guy to get chances to grow. So I just felt that because of our circumstances we could play this slow -- and good for [Newton], he went to New England, which I think is going to be a great spot for him and I think he's going to have a lot of success."

jeremy you know as well as i do that none of that was ron's fault.   it was the players missing assignments, making mistakes, and not doing their jobs.  possibly a little blame also on the coaches he hired, but none of that in ron opinion, has anything to do with ron.  i mean he voted.

Just saying, Cam got vet min. Haskins there or not, circumstances absolutely allowed for the Skins to sign him if Ron wanted him. He didn’t. It’s plain to see.
 

Only other team who even contacted Cam (and didn’t offer him a contract) was the Browns. The entire league seems to agree that Cam has nothing left. Pats took a chance but it’s unlikely it’ll work out well for them. Low risk because of the money so certainly worth it in their eyes but Cam just isn’t anywhere near the same player he once was. His throwing shoulder is shot. I love the guy, loved him as a player here when he was healthy, but it’s time to move on.

i hope he has a career resurrection like rich gannon did.  idk if NE is the right place for that but who knows if there will even be ball this year

Translated: We tried to call Cam and his agent.  But the numbers I have must not be current.  I left messages on the numbers I had, but neither ever called back.  Had to be a mistake, because given what I did for him, I know he would have been eager to play here.  Chalk it up to a missed opportunity.  Not sure how New England found his current number.

      Wanted to jump into this thread. Although I do not post anymore I do look in as there are a few old friends around. Loved hearing some of the names you mentioned.  Another  oldie is NanceUSMC.  He is the one who got me here from the old Observer forum.  Good guy and smart football guy. I have learned a lot from a lot of good Huddlers over the years, Over time. we have sadly lost a few who left this earth too soon.  Anyone who know of someone, it would be nice to try to make a list.  One of the more recent, CosmoGirl,  was someone that kind of hit hard.  Life sucks sometimes. Some of the best times were when we had our own tailgate and could meet up in person.  I think it made us better. Several dedicated volunteers, lead by LiverMush, started setting things up in the wee hours of each gameday morning.  Don't know all those regulars but I remember JakeFlake was one.  For you newbies...each game,  a Huddler (or a group) sponsored the food for each tailgate.  Eating was free but a donation was asked for.  At the end of the year those donations were used to buy bicycles for Toys for Tots.  Over the years Huddlers bought a lot of new bikes for kids for Christmas.  (I am guessing a couple of hundred each year.)  We had a good time getting together, got to make friends in person, and then got to feel like you were doing something good. It was truly a community. I got to meet Dan Morgan at one of our tailgates...he brought pizza from his restaurant.  How many of you remember that?  Glad the restaurant did not make it....lol. Not only have people changed, and come and gone.....but the entire nature and purpose has changed. Nothing lasts forever and we move on but we still like to think about good times. Same reason we take pictures. Want to ask a question I have not seen anyone else mention......who remembers    "The Couch" ?  We have argued, laughed, lived the ups and downs of football and dealt with a little real life along the way.  A thanks to  the Mods who keep this going.  I am sure they sacrifice a lot of their time out of love for the forum and the Panthers. Take care my friends and be well.  I will close with my new favorite quote which I think is greatly needed in these difficult times.

      My top-5 JAGS: 1. Tommy Tremble: May not ever be top-tier, but has been solid and you never doubt the effort. 2. Cade Mays: Not bad for a 6th rounder. Hated to see him go. 3. Brady Christensen: One of the most versatile backup OLs in the NFL. Hopefully we re-sign him. 4. Trevis Gipson: Quietly was really solid depth last season. Glad we brought him back. 5. Brycen Tremayne: Has been solid depth at WR, flashing at times last year.

      He wasn't a JAG, he's been a starter every year of his career. Didn't turn into the superstar it seemed like he might his rookie year, but I think part of that has been being misused. Guy was/is a baller.
