Life without Christian McCaffrey

Actually hoping to see the return of Reggie. Davis really made an impact catching passes out of the backfield, but Reggie offers something more akin to CMC as a runner.

Neither guy, or both together, make up for the loss, but you've got to give Davis credit for hitting the ground running on this opportunity.

We need a RB more similar to Warrick Dunn on the roster. This would stop the OC from riding CMC into the ground and we would see a mix of both backs. So long as CMC doesn't have any competition even close to his ability the OC will ignore (and rightly so) the lesser RBs. The OC wants to keep his job, and the best way to do that is ride CMC into the ground in the short term.

When CMC returns you won't see much of anything at all from the other RBs.

I truly think the Panthers have this notion engrained as a franchise that’s come from a lack of sustainable success (never back to back winning seasons) of a ‘one shot at the SB and that’s it, that’s all we will get’ mantra which has seriously infected everyone including the fans.

Running a player into the ground to get there is the norm. It’s sad there is no thought or effort put into preservations of players and doing it the smart way to build a consistently winning year in and out. Tepper has mentioned this, but it doesn’t feel that way when your back up to CMC Is Davis first of all, and second never sees the light of day until he’s injured.

Could’ve had Fournette for 1 y 2m deal. Imagine him and cmc in backfield with motions, or cmc in the slot.

Part of my frustration with this franchise is that it almost never does what I want. Each fan has their own view of what type of team we should build, and then we all become frustrated when they go in a different direction. That is part of being a fan, but what I can't stand anymore are the idiotic decisions made by this franchise that other franchises don't make.

I think we have a clever coaching staff, and you can see that our playcalling, for the most part, has improved from what we had under RR. We adjust based on what the opposing team is doing on offense and defense, and that just wasn't happening as much under RR imo. In that sense we are in a better position to build for the future.

The problem is that we are losing now because of idiotic decisions made in the past. Just as an example, we payed Matt Kalil, a player who was widely thought of as terrible at the time by nearly everyone, a sum of money that was unthinkable given the circumstances. Everyone on this forum recoiled in horror when we gave Matt that contract. I couldn't believe my eyes when I looked at the contract numbers. So we make this idiotic mistakes, and they pile up, and then we don't have enough money for a good roster. We don't have the money or draft currency to have a good backup for CMC. Every team has a few weak spots. We have holes all over our roster, and we're years away from filling these holes. Something has to change.

So who is Mike's current backup? Reggie?

I wonder if they treat Mike like a featured RB or if they actually just run more of a committee approach.  Mike.  Reggie.  Samuel.  Gadget runs.

Unfortunately I expect us to throw the ball a lot because we’ll likely be behind 14-0 early. I’d look for Teddy to throw at least 50 passes this week, if we’re able to move the chains enough.

I like Davis but it was evident that the D completely stopped respecting us once CMC didn't come back. They looked more aggressive and less conservative. Now with film on Davis and without CMC I would expect more of that.

Definitely got a lot of yards from soft coverage. The big thing is, with a trash, I mean TRASH interior OL that would make a Florida Tuskers coach blush, he’s gonna need to break a lot of tackles. He can’t buy us those three extra yards by getting to the corner like CMC.

I'm expecting solid from Davis in this stint. Not sure what happens when they game plan him but I would think you hit the nail on the head. The Bolts have a good D, if he can put up decent numbers thats a huge win.

    • So we cut him if we don't give him the option?  I'm pretty sure there are players who didn't get the 5th-year option that played year four of their rookie contracts with their draft team.
    • I didn't say do nothing if we don't draft one in the 1st and I"m not counting on a FA to magically become a franchise QB. But signing a FA to be our starter for the year and then re-address the next offseason would be FAR better than reaching on the wrong QB in the 1st this offseason. Feeling we HAVE to find our long term solution just because we need a new QB is how we got into this mess.  We thought Two Gloves would be at worst an average level QB for a few years, that didn't happen, so we went out and traded for Darnold.  That didn't work so we went out and traded for Baker, that didn't work so we went out and traded up to get Bryce. Our last 4 QB moves were all trying to force a solution, none of them worked out, and we're still trying to find Cam's replacement all these years later.  We'd just have been better off spending a year or two building up the rest of the team and going year to year on FA QB's while doing so.  I get it, it will be frustrating to deal with, but then when you find that actual long term solution, they plug right into an already built out roster and you're ready to contend immediately.
    • Great win, should be 3-0 but I'll take 2-1. LaMelo is an MVP caliber player, period.   This is looking like an incredible draft so far. Sion James looking like the exact type of role player that all contending teams need to have, absolute steal in the 2nd. Kalk is a work in progress and I question how much upside he has but he's already been a considerable upgrade at C for us compared to the last several years (outside of healthy Mark which of course was rare).   Really seems like new ownership/front office has change the culture here significantly. Every guy looks bought in now.
