McCaffrey not expected to play Sunday

The curse of the big RB contract continues.

This is why you don't pay RB's big money. Short careers and some of the highest potential for injury on the field.

Let's hope this is an aberration and not the start of a trend. We can't afford to have made a bad decision on a contract of that size.....again.

Yeah, if he turns fragile it's going to be a killer for us. Hopefully it's just a short run of bad luck.

Yeah, playing damn near 100% of offensive snaps under the Rivera era in effort to salvage his job had nothing to do with it right, right? lol

I have said it 100 times on here, running him into the ground last season just so he could get the record and then paying him for it while he was still under his rookie deal in the offseason has to be one of the dumbest moves in this franchises history.

Right behind ruining Cam with Shula during his peak, while also surrounding him with bums on the O line and and wack receiving threats not named Greg Olsen (when it comes to consistency).

He has been extremely durable but so was Cam. The Rivera Era Keep Pounding on our star players was bound to eventually take a toll. How many of our star players from that era were literally run into the dirt?

Hell, look at KK too.

KK was the opposite of run into the dirt. One of Ron’s biggest thing was using DL in a rotation to keep them fresh. For his career he has played in the 60s in snap percentage, once reaching 73% and another time 70%. Compare that to Fletcher Cox who I picked as a contemporary and has regularly been in the 70s and 80s in snap percentage throughout his career. Aaron Donald is another high 70s, low 80s guy and even reached 90% one year.

Not all coaches are big on giving running backs big deals like the Panthers did with Christian McCaffrey, who got a four-year, $64 million extension in the offseason that made him the league's highest-paid back. McCaffrey may be the exception because of all the touches he gets when healthy. Said Bucs coach Bruce Arians: “If I had a guy like Christian I'd give him all I could,'' he said.

It’s more than likely not an aberration unfortunately. History shows this happens to an extremely high number of rbs on their second contracts. There are a few freaks like AP. And even AP got injured the same season after signing his mega deal in 2011 but came back insanely quick that makes me think he’s not entirely human and was the 2012 mvp. But those are incredibly rare. The fact he’s getting this banged up already is extremely concerning. Injuries add up quick and they become shells of themselves before you can even think. It was a horrible deal but not surprising. This franchise still hasn’t learned anything from past mistakes.

A 4 year contract to the best player on the entire team is far from the issue with the franchise...it’s irrelevant to even discuss.

Many players have been paid much more for farewell tours and sitting on the bench for multiple years. CMC gets banged up and misses a few games all you all rave lol.

That’s how football works. He’s 24 and had a sprain and no another minor injury. He is extremely young and will not be close to being done for the entirety of his contract.

KK's fat ran him into the ground.

I don't believe in paying RBs big money in today's NFL. I don't care how great they play. That money should be spent on WRs/O-line, or elsewhere. Same thing with LBs. Don't pay them big money. Keep your LBs and RBs young and fresh, and then dump them when they want a big payday. And don't draft them in the 1st round either.

    • Why do you say that. What leads you to think that we, as supporters, think his ceiling is 10-12. That's a ridiculous assumption on your part. The Seahawks won the SB with Darnold passing for 25 TD's, 14 Ints with a 99.1 rating for the season.  The Panthers with Young were at 23 TD's, 11 Ints and a 78.8 rating for the season. Not that far off. The problem with all the Young discourse around here is the assumption that the QB is the sole determining factor for a teams success. That just isn't true and it's certainly not how Morgan and Tilis are building the Panthers.
    • Do we pay based on how many wins or how many games Bryce led us to wins? We've spent quite a bit on defense this year and hopefully they're much improved. If the Panthers do get to 10 wins, but Bryce has another year like last year where he showed up big in a couple, was present in a few, and forgettable in most, do we still pay him 50m per year?  I keep bringing it up because I think it's relevant, but Bryce was outplayed by a 6m per year backup last year. I don't see how it's possible to pay a top tier QB contract to someone who's putting up backup QB production.
    • I understand tempering expectations, but there are some issues with his points. Walker was a 3 year starter, but Green Bay let him walk and no other team was quick to snatch him up. That says something. Freeling will compete to start. With Hunter, we rotate our linemen and even 5th round pick Cam Jackson played some meaningful snaps last year. Both Brown III and Wharton have underwhelmed since we picked them up. Hunter is a run plugger that we have needed. Hunter will play early, even if he isn't the "starter." Brazzell was described as one of Canales' favorite prospects in the draft and he has a speed element we have been missing. I think Canales is going to have plays drawn up with Brazzell on the field just out of pure excitement. It will be up to Brazzell to prove he can handle it, though. If he can, he will play. As far as our secondary picks, yeah they have to earn their stripes and Evero tends to lean on veterans. So they might take time, but if they can show they can play, they will see the field. Smith-Wade and Ransom did. Sam Hecht simply has to show he can handle the mental side of the NFL game. If he can, he is in a direct competition with Fortner, who's also relatively young, but also on his 3rd NFL team and doesn't have the power profile of Hecht.  I can appreciate that Gantt wants to pour cold water on what was perceived as an impactful draft, but facts are facts.
