Good Ownership

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

So here's a question I've been pondering...

How many teams in the NFL can rightly be said to have good ownership?

Elite ownership is limited to two teams, the Patriots and the Steelers. Some might argue for the Packers, but that's a sidebar all its own given their structure.

I'm interested in what teams beyond the big two people would credit with having really good leadership and guidance at the top.

Also feel free to name the worst of the worst (goodness knows there's plenty of contenders).

And finally, although the most obvious grade for him is "incomplete" right now, where do you put David Tepper in this hierarchy?

Yeah, Ravens ownership is in the elite category for sure. People forget they were founded in 1996 and got a Superbowl in 2001, that's damn impressive. Always draft very well and always seem to be in the hunt. I think Tepper is definitely done some very good things especially to the FO, it's just going to be difficult for him to live down how poorly he handled the Cam release.

What are your defining ownership traits that separate elite from good?

For me it's being consistent contenders. No current ownership has more or even as many championships as those two teams.

With that said, I'd invite anybody responding to offer their own definitions.

It really depends on the criteria...all teams have moments of disasters -taking out the big two and Packers...so considering that and other factors...

Seahawks, Ravens, Saints, Eagles, Vikings, Chiefs, Bears are borderline

So including the 3 mentioned thats 9/10 teams out of 32. I think that’s a reasonable fraction.

I chose them just off of having solid football people working for them within the FO, it is not to say they don’t have poor areas or disasters never happening to them.

But generally they have something good going for them and good football people working within them somewhere. Generally these teams don’t make failing, erratic moves very often and value consistency over attention. They also build  or have built sustainable culture. But then again some have had decades to do so.

I think there’s probably another 10 with decent ownership but not the greatest.

And probably a dozen bottom dwellers.

I’d put the panthers borderline decent/bottom dwellers now but mainly due to the unknowns...and I’d put them in upper half of the bottom dwellers before Tepper with JR and that’s being generous.

So if you don't want a meddling owner, which you have stated time and time again.. then it would be the guys incharge of football operations that would have direct influence on a teams competitiveness.

An owner does hire a general manager.  Sometimes by himself. Sometimes with help

So I can see the owner getting credit for hiring a good GM.  In turn, that can lead to a consistent winner. Not always.

funny you posted this.  I was flipping through channels and landed on PTI on Espn, and they were doing a segment about an owner, I think maybe a baseball team, but Kornheiser said something about owners being hard heads or something, then said he thought Tepper was going to be that kind of guy but now, despite the record of the team so far, he's starting to come around that Tepper is going to be a winning owner.

I mean he hasn't seen quick success that's for sure and he probably should have canned Rivera ASAP. Keeping Hurney is a huge mistake as well but he will learn. I think he has enough money and competitive spirit to be a great owner givin time and the right people around him.
