Verge's Draft General thread 2021

I don’t think Mac Jones will be that bad. He just doesn’t have the potential to carry an offense like Lance, Fields, and Wilson do. They have the ability to better stretch the field with stronger arms and to take over with their legs when a play breaks down. Give Mac a pocket and some weapons and he should be solid. The other guys just have potential to be something special IMO.

I'm like this close to dropping him below Mond. He has some really bad tape, and is hard as hell to evaluate. His ND game is what I'm watching literally right now and it is just...not good?

I'm sure you've seen way more tape on him than I have, I just sometimes get gut feelings about athletes doing well or poorly. I also have this theory about players that get shat on or doubted being due for an F you moment.

I said this on twitter recently, I feel like that shirtless pic of him will some day be used as like the "look at me now" after exceeding expectations.

We'll see, we'll see.

I’m saying he is not our pick in the first rd. I said he is not a first rd pick imo, and if another team is dumb enough to do it so be it. Rhule and Brady doesn’t want another garbagewater, they already said that when they said we want a mobile qb

This is what I’m saying in the other thread about people projecting Tom Brady on Mac Jones.

Also, since I was asked how I would rank this QB class compared to the last:
1. Trevor Lawrence
2. Joe Burrow
3. Zach Wilson
4. Tua Tagovailoa
5. Justin Herbert
6. Trey Lance
7. Justin Fields
8. Mac Jones
9. Kellen Mond
10. Jordan Love

LOL even their teammates think Jones is better than Tagovailoa.

I don't know what the guy has done to piss so many people off. 🤣

The funny thing about him is that even the Lance stans(and I am largely one) can understand the criticisms of him as a prospect. The Jones stans cannot wrap their heads around why people don't like him as a prospect.

IMO, you really have to believe in that elite processing and upper tier decision making idea for him to be a top 10 prospect.

That's exactly what I see in Jones.

I wasn't high on him when I watched him play for Alabama - fell into the trap of "oh he's not that athletic / oh he's throwing to future first round picks" etc.

Then when I analysed his tape I started seeing what Simms, Jenkins et al see. A guy that clearly processes the game at an elite rate (in just over a year of starts). Games are won and lost from the pocket - he can slide in it and can make all the throws you ask an NFL QB to make. That's all I needed to see.

I don't agree that he's got a higher floor than others either - he's just as likely to bust as all the rest. He'll either stick in the NFL or he won't.

No-he cannot do what those guys can do--exactly.  Neither can Brady, so he doen't try.  Now, some will say, "He is comparing Brady to Jones!!"  I would say to them, "You would mock me if I compared Tom Brady in college to Tom Brady in the NFL."

Funny story.  I was with my coaching buddies (used to coach HS football) at a preseason game vs. the Pats.  Bledsoe, the pro bowl QB for NE, was removed during the second quarter, and some #12 came in that I had never heard of---and I watched him.  I actually said, "Guys, I think #12 is better than Bledsoe."  They all died laughing at me--the teased me all the way home (lived an hour from Charlotte).  It was brutal.  (I tell this story because I was right--I forget the times when I was not).  Today,  remind them of it, and they tell a different story--don't recall, etc.  I sense some of that will go on here--either way.

Damn strong argument.

We are waiting to hear why he would not.

Why he might:

77.4% completions, 42 TDs, 4 Ints, 350 yards per game.  What criteria are you using to dismiss him?  Remember not to list things that he had when he won a national title with numbers higher than Burrow (last year) and Trevor.

He has a quick release and processes very quickly.  So if you discount the fact that he succeeded on the biggest stage in the toughest conference and won a national title, please tell me about this amazing power you have--because it has not been a problem to this point.

He can't make NFL level throws.

He can't force the ball into coverage when he needs to.

He can't drive the ball to the opposite boundary. Corners will drive on those passes from him and will be lots of picks.

All of his deep balls over 45 yds in the air the reciever had to stop or slow down. This will lead to tackles or passes defensed.

The guy is exactly like Teddy skill wise. He excels in 1/3 field throws in the 10 to 20 yd range.

Take that away from him as a DC and he's done.

We will.  He may be a bust, may fall like a brass balloon.  But to say anything (as others are doing) with absolute certainty about a player who has only performed at the highest level on the highest stage is false bravado.  I do not know who will be good and who will not--I am just basing my support for a man that possesses some impressive stats and impressive cognitive and leadership skills.  If you ever hear me say, "He is not going in the first round..." or "He is a bust"  then please understand that i am bluffing to impress others into thinking that i have wisdom I actually lack, because any intelligent fan, scout, GM, etc. will tell you, "The best I can give you is an educated guess."

Chris Weinke did basically the same thing. Highest stage. Heisman.

Mac Jones = Chris Weinke.

100% dead phuckin serious.

Matt Ryan has a bigger arm and did it at Boston College not Alabama.

Come on man.

Did what?  Threw for 77.4% completion rate?  350 yards per game?  Won a national championship?  A: No, No, No.

Has Matt ever played on a big stage for a ring?  Oh, that is right.  Once.  How did that turn out?  (Hint: 28-3--choking sounds)

Do they give trophies for arms?  kids choice awards arm wrestle GIF by Kids Choice Sports 2017

Oh, I guess they do.

    • Not in same league. Caldwell just hit a 10.00 on the RAS. 2nd out of 3830 from 1987 onward.  https://x.com/MathBomb/status/2027885023387349047 Yeah I mean Louis had a sub 9.00 RAS. Still very very good, no doubt. Louis is small, no 2 ways about it. He is likely a sub package lb in nickel packages or specialized WLB. Be fine ST gunner to start for sure. 6 foot flat and 220lb is pushing it for a starting LB. At 10 to 20lbs less than the other LBs he'd better be closer to the top in most timed drills. He's gonna be challenged when some of the wrs in the class can matchup bigger stronger faster, much less TE in the run game.  Yeah instinct matter and he has them, but that size is a massive red flag compared to many of the other LBS in this class.    Rodriguez is the LB that really climbed this week from a pure grit guy to great flash with athleticism people wrote off cause he was a QB at first at UVA. 18.4mph in the backpedal. Production the last 2 years were great. I'd be thrilled with him as the future mike.   Hill likely moved out of 51 and into the top 45 picks ( Ravens at 45 I can't imagine don't bite if he makes it there). Honestly Hill imo is a 1st rounder and I'd be ok with him as he fits the MLB we have missed the last few years. People would crow it's a reach but he's top 30 all-time I'm RAS for a LB at 9.9+ . Plus he was big time in big games when he was healthy. And that br a big check: meds.
    • Miller, Melo, Coby, Moose, and Bridges all on the floor at the same time must be a nightmare for defenses lol. Switch one out for Kon and still a nightmare. Coby really does bring a true 6th man value and looks like he could start if Melo was out after only a few games of getting his feet wet.
    • Well I guess he should stop playing football. This was his defining moment and chance to prove he was generational and he failed. What a waste of football life..
