It's also not so much about the total cap as it is the available cap.

Which depends entirely on the deal structure and what parts of the contract are bs bonuses ect ect. The guarenteed money makes them low risk.

Erving gave up 1 sack and had 1 penalty in 5 games last year (279 snaps) playing LT for the Cowboys on a patchwork offensive line without any running game and a backup QB. 

Erving gave up 1 sack in 13 games as a LG for the chiefs in 2018.

 

Eiflein was 1st team All rookie as a C in 2017 before getting injured in 2018 and then switching positions in 2019 to Guard. Played 1 game at guard, got hurt and was waived. Looked average with the Jets. 

 

Theres potential there. To say they've stunk at every position is simply not true. These are penny stocks. Low risk high reward signings.

Erving:

279 snaps, 1 sack allowed, 1 penalty in 2020. (banged up, didn't play the season)

589 snaps, 7 penalties, 5 sacks allowed in 2019 (meh)

He's an average, decent signing.  Nothing to be disappointed about at all, $8 mil guaranteed over 2 seasons is totally reasonable.

I don't hate the signings either as far as quality.

I was, however, hoping to get away from depending on "good when healthy" or "coming off of injury" players.

It's two talented guys that haven't quite panned out in the NFL.

By the looks of it Fitterer and Rhule have decided they'd rather target the guys they want early and just get the deal over the line at what they consider a reasonable price than sit around and let the market dictate who we end up with.

It's aggressive - albeit not with the elite FAs.

It fixes depth and possibly a starting guard, maybe two.  Take your small victories as they come.  It's a long war.
