Luke Kuechly: Teddy Bridgewater 'understands it's a performance-based business'

I feel bad for Teddy. I mean damn, he seems like a great enough guy. He did his best. He wasnt good enough but he showed up and didn't complain and even after all these months of fans saying he is trash, he kept himself quiet and took it.

I for one salute you Teddy. May not have been a solution we needed but thanks for taking all of this with class. I guess when you get a big fat paycheck helps a lot, but there are many other divas in the league that would have made a huge stink of this situation.

Honestly, I don't and it has everything to do with the money. He's paid millions. He didn't perform. We haven't sugar coated that. The organization didn't really start airing their disappointment until after Teddy threw the staff under the bus for "not getting the play call in on time" when he missed a wide open DJ in the endzone. There seemed to be a clear shift toward "fug this guy" in regards to Teddy from the organization after that and honestly it's tough to blame them.

But he did complain... publicly. Are you not remembering him throwing the staff under the bus regarding timing of playcalls? And always using 'we' when talking about failures? I'm not even saying he's necessarily wrong about any of that, but while he was far from the worst to come along he did not 'keep quiet and take it'.

That's the pot calling the kettle black. Some of you really should learn how to use Google an check your facts first.

The floor price for a starting quarterback is around $20m according to Spotrac https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/rankings/average/quarterback/

Teddy ranks only 16th in average salary, and the only ones below him are Rothlisburger(after a huge restructuring), backups and qb's still under their rookie deal.

$20m might have been top 5 money 10 years ago, but thats just the floor these days. It's called inflation.

We took a calculated gamble because he was familiar with the system Brady was installing, and did well in it the year prior going 5-0. It didn't work. Life sucks, get over it.

You can cry in your beers all you want, but some of you armchair GM's need to check your facts first and start looking at the team long term.

Bridgewater has a voidable year after this year, and we're about 1 year away from being a complete team. But the bricks are being put in their place, and theres a light at the end of the tunnel.

I know it's hard to be patient when your definition of success is a Superbowl or we're trash, so you might wanna start lowering your expectations and get with the process, otherwise you're always gonna be disappointed.

They're not wrong though. Teddy hasn't changed a bit since coming into the league, even on his Saints film, and the results were extremely predictable and I daresay even worse than the mediocrity many saw coming from the outset. It was a poor decision regardless of the money though the money makes it worse given the same highly-predictable results could have been had for much less, full stop.

Nice breakdown sir. Wish more of our fans understood this. It’s a process. Looking at the contract structure itself gives you an idea of what the organization had in mind when they signed him: a veteran QB familiar with a new offense and a bridge (pun intended) to an eventual successor. Makes sense to me.

We paid cheap starter money to a backup, that's the failure. His film screams backup, a good back up but still not a realistic option as a starter. It was a terrible deal upon mental conception, everything that followed was a massive waste of money and time.

Bottom line for me is Bridgewater played average to poorly in the second half in almost every game last season.  He was also 0-8 on game winning or go ahead drives.  The roster was good enough to not look that bad as a QB and to have at least one or two game winning drives.. a QB who can elevate his team or was a even top fifteen QB would have done more with less and would have played better.  Unless the coaches and GM don't like a QB to draft then I'm fine with Teddy this next upcoming season but wont be expecting much more than what we saw last season (unfortunately).  The Panthers definitely need a QB that is not Teddy,,, whether it be this season or next.

Damn, son.

I've defended Bridgewater all year because I don't think he's as bad as many make out, but when Clark Kent savages you like that it's time to get in your mini-van and hit the road.

So it took one of your personal heroes to tell you he fuging sucks? Just watch the tape from last season, you don't need Luke to tell you. Pull the wool from over your eyes bro.

QBs dont win much in this league throwing 15 fuging touchdowns for a season. That is something you do over a 6-7 game stretch.

It's easier to replace Teddy Bridgewater than it is to replace Cam Newton. That's what it boils down to, Cam didn't fit the rebuild plans, and they needed someone to cover the gap as they turned the roster over the course of the next 2-3 years, there's a reason the vast majority of veterans were moved on from in the 2020 off-season by release or retirement and we ate all that dead money then & still some now.

There's also a reason all of the 2021 FA's are around 26 years old and on primarily 1-2 year deals aside from a couple that are 3 yr deals. The real cap space opens for us in 2022 / 2023 -- by then the rookie will have a couple seasons of experience, guys like Burns, and Moore will be accounted for financially and Brown will just be entering his 4th season with a 5th year option as a 1st round choice.

If things are managed well, and we get Fields / Lance -- we could be set up to be in a very good situation, there's a lot to look forward to, this draft / QB situation is key.

Our team was good enough for an average to below average qb to put up at least 25 passing TDs. Instead we picked the safest option out there (similar to Mac Jones) and got what we deserved. You dont win in this league by never taking chances and dumping off the 2 yard flat route over and over.

I was referencing him "complaining" about all the off season hype of him being gone ( as what this thread is about). For months we here have been calling for his head and calling him trash.  As I said, i appreciate him taking this sort of post season criticism professionally.

It should not be that hard to give another man a decent send off. He suited up and payed. He was paid what he was given. He did what he did. Not his fault Hurney paid him starter money for backup ability but we got through the season.

Time to stop shitting on Teddy. He filled the gap this organization needed and chose.

Truth hurts but this is all that needs to be said. No quarterback gets a pass for losing. The previous starter didn't for his losing record heading out the door and he was a top overall draft selection.

I can say for sure I am over this awkward attempt at trying to copy the New Orleans Saints. Take out the trash and be the Carolina Panthers again.

Anyone who enjoys losing records can follow the quarterback to his next destination.

    • Although he does have outside experience, this pick has Troy Hill succession planning in the slot written all over it.  D'Shawn Jamison is probably in the most trouble to keep a roster spot with this pick. Still only 21 yo too. Rounds 2-5 all players 21 y/o or younger.
    • Joe Burrow didn't really do anything until his 5th year in college football.  Couldn't even break a depth chart and had to transfer to play.  I little his 4th.  Guess he should of been a 7th rounder.
