You just wasted 3 picks on Darnold if you take a QB

Not really, just more dart throws to hopefully get a bullseye at the most important position. Plus if Darnold plays even decent as a bridge QB we could still get some of those picks back trading him once the draft pick is ready, or if Darnold really dominates we could trade the draft pick for picks back later. I wouldn't blindly take a QB there we don't like just because they're a solid prospect and we need a long term solution there, but if the team is sold on Fields or Lance and they're sitting there then by all means go for it.

I'm sure this is a trade stir the pot move by us. If we canncreate enuf buzz that we might take Fields, it will cause a trade up that knocks whomever they are looking at. I can see Atl and Miami moving their picks. Then that would give us a 50 50 chance of landing Pitts. Bengals and us. Don't see Detroit taking TE with all their needs at WR. But Detroit has done some interesting stuff before.

Maybe like this

Lawrence- Jax

Wilson- NYJ

Jones- SF

Denver trades up- Fields

Chase/Sewell- CIN (This pick is the pivot IMO)

Patriots trades up- Lance

Waddle/Smith- DET

Pitts- US. Woo-hoo.

Maybe but I am still in the "trust Rhule/Brady" mode until they prove me wrong.  The issues leaking out about Fields are starting to scare the hell out of me.

They wanted and placed Teddy as a top priority, gave up after one crazy convid year. They are in the sus category for me about QBs, trading for Sam " worst graded QB 3 years running"  Darnold didnt help it much. No excuses if Darnold flames out.

I think it’s safe to say that with Brady, more weapons and a better line (how much better yet to be revealed), Darnold will perform better here than NY.

Modestly better?  Substantially better?  Will it be enough?  Remains to be seen...

You're thinking about it all wrong.

We gave up three picks for Darnold:  2nd, 4th and 6th.  That's really not even the equivalent of a 1st round pick.  Let's just say it's a high second.  We then proceed to pick Fields, assuming he is there at 8.  All in, we've spent a high second and a high first for TWO chances at uncovering a franchise QB.

Odds say that about 50% of first round QB's "make it".  We end up with two, and it didn't even cost us two first round picks.  That's a win.  No other way to look at it.

The only "bad" outcome (in the above scenario) is if both guys fail.  That's always a chance with QB's!  But you still gotta keep punching your ticket until you get lucky.  Every other scenario is a win.  Three out of four outcomes are to our favor . . . yea, I'll roll those dice.

Wrong.

If the guy you used the first round pick on fails, or even if the guy you already had succeeds, then you wasted a first round pick when you could have used it to shore up a position of great need.

That's a bad outcome.

I think Id trade whatever current panther starting 5(OL) for Mekhi Becton. Its close either way...

He should play better, cause honestly he simply can not play worse than he already has. I hope he gets multiple SB MVPs for the panthers.

Slater is gonna end up being a guard

I agree with you. But not on your trade post. Why with WFT or Pitt? That's too far to drop each with possible playoff teams next year. So it ends up being a low first or second rounder. The issue with the Pat's is they don't have the draft capital unless we get their 1st and 2nd. A comp 3rd is useless for a trade up. Figure I'd just quote once. But yeah I agree with you 100% Slater will be a guard.

Rhule/Brady put Teddy in so many situations to win the game and he didnt come through.  Thats on Teddy not them.

Fields slow progression reads, pocket awareness and long delivery are what is being pointed out as to why he is "dropping".    All the athletic ability in the world means nothing if you cannot read a defense or get past your first read.   Chris simms does a great breakdown on him on Ryan R podcast on the ringer

He is actually the top quarterback in this draft at going beyond his first read. There is definitely that narrative going around, but it is proven to be a false one.

Maybe but there are a lot of guys out there breaking fields down and seeing the same thing.   If he was a slam dunk we would have moved to 3

Ohio State sources are very confident that Fields is going to SF at 3 after his second pro day, and after speaking with SF staff and brass, FWIW.

Of course they want to hype up their guy. It brings him more money and makes them look better. I still think somehow Mac Jones goes to 3.

Fields is going to drop in the draft.  I bet he slides right by us

I would be shocked.  I’m not buying into the Mac Jones at 3 circlejerk, it’ll either be Fields or Lance imo.  I think they’ll take Fields, but if not, there’s no way he’s there at our pick.  Somebody will trade up for him if he slips past San Fran.

They can claim they see whatever they want, but statistically speaking no QB has a better rating when throwing past their first read than Fields.  There is no such thing as a slam dunk and our staff may feel no draft prospect is worth 3 first round picks (and I agree).

i mean that's just plain common sense for me but on the other hand  that seems to go in one ear & out the other around here more often than not  ..i mean just look at the facts...

A)...it"s investing in one of the biggest & most important unknowns on the field considering the fact that Darnold has never statistically been nothing more than a  below average QB in the NFL.

B) you got to take into consideration that we have Joe Brady for an OC whose done wonders in the past developing young collegiate QBS but for only a very limited amount of time what one or maybe two more years tops before he gets a head coaching job somewhere else more than likely

C) great investment way way more return for a quality or even average QB on the open market than any other position on the field.for a prime example of that just look at what what we had to give in order to sign Darnold.& my gosh it"s not like an upgrade over Will Grier isn't a bad idea who has little to no value in a trade

D)...& most importantly Sam Darnold needs to be pushed or let's say fight for the starting job in camp instead of basically being unopposed.

E) like I've said before you gotta strike while the iron is hot #8 if the opportunity presents itself to draft a QB that you like and believe in if your the Panthers

Spending a 2,4, 6, and 1 to find a franchise QB doesn’t worry me.

How can people want to trade 3 firsts and some seconds for one but get their panties in a wad over drafting one to compete with Darnold? lol

They’re only wasted if no one works out out, that is ineptness but placing all bets on Darnold might be too - when you have a shot to pick up someone and Darnold flops. Might be that no one works out, which is possible, but I won’t be mad at the effort or the unknown.
