What was the Carolina Panthers’ worst move this offseason?

Mistakes are a part of life. They also make regular appearances for your favorite NFL team, whichever it might be. Every year, organizations make blunders. They sign mediocre players to exorbitant contracts in free agency, they pass on promising prospects in the draft and they let quality athletes go in favor of negligible salary cap savings.

The Carolina Panthers are no exception to the rule. Even though general manager Scott Fitterer has generally done a good job in his first offseason at the helm, he has also made some highly-questionable decisions. According to the Athletic, signing offensive lineman Cameron Erving was the worst move the team has made this offseason.

“Despite nearly a decade of failing to find a successor to Jordan Gross (who retired after the 2013 season!), new GM Scott Fitterer did not treat the position with much urgency. The Panthers signed journeyman free agent Cam Erving to a two-year, $10 million deal, despite the former first-round pick coming off a poor, injury-plagued season in Dallas.”

If the plan really is to start Erving at left tackle, odds are it’s going to go bad for the Panthers once the season begins. However, as bad as Erving is, it’s not the kind of mistake that can haunt an organization for a generation.

From our perspective there was at least one move (or non-move) that qualifies as a worse decision. Sitting at No. 8 overall in the draft, Carolina had a chance to select a potential franchise quarterback and play him for five years on a relatively cheap rookie contract. Instead of taking Justin Fields, they went with Jaycee Horn instead.

While we expect Horn to be an excellent cornerback at the next level, passing on a top QB prospect when you don’t have an established starter is just about as bad as it gets in the NFL. If Fields goes on to become a star for the Bears, the Panthers may be regretting that one for decades.

You could be right because the top teams selecting in the 2021 NFL Draft must have felt that way as well because they passed on him in the draft.

He looked fine to me in college but I guess once the professional scouts dug into his tape there was real concern about him processing defenses on the fly.   I guess the northwestern and illi games revealed a lot.   But like I said to me he looked great but I am just a Joe Sixpack

He will be 29 next month and he is on his third team in two years. His ability to stay on the field has plagued his career as much as his struggles playing tackle. It is a risk vs reward move but for Carolina more of the same so you can't blame fans or the media for panning the signing. Overall the up in the air status of the position is simply discouraging.

Going from College Football to the NFL is a whole new and different world, there is so much to consider in the evaluation of college players, especially quarterbacks.

I’d have to agree. I’ve loved almost all our moves. Erving is the only one I’m iffy on and it doesn’t help one of my best buds at work is a Browns fan and has been telling me how bad he is since he was drafted lol

Schroedinger's LT.  We won't know until about the middle of training camp whether we got Oher or Khalil.  As of right now, both outcomes are equally likely.

    • Appreciate that, bro!  And I could definitely see that with Cam.  Even though he’s a little younger than me, he is also someone I admire and feel a kinship with for a lot of various reasons. Funny enough, a few years after that encounter with Steve, I went to Charlotte with one of my friends whose brothers owned a moving company at the time.  He dropped me off uptown and went to work the day with them where I would wait until he got done and then we were gonna go to the Bobcats game that night.  So I walk all through that area for hours.  After awhile, I walk back towards the arena and sit in a bench on the backside of the arena, where the practice court and player’s entrance was.  As I’m sitting there, I look up and almost think I’m seeing things - I squint and blink my eyes a couple times just to be sure, and yes…  it’s one of my childhood heroes, Muggsy Bogues walking across the crosswalk and into the arena.  I think he was coaching the Sting then, iirc.  Part of me wanted to just say, “Hey!  Muggsy!  Thank you for the inspiration and memories!  You were one of my favorite players as a kid!”  But, I just watched him walk by and into the arena and thought, “that was cool!”  I also so Miguel Cotto a couple years back while in Orlando and told my kids who it was but didn’t say anything to him.  I think somewhere in my subconscious, that encounter with Steve really made me feel like the gamble on finding out if they’re receptive to interaction just isn’t worth finding out.  At the end of the day, no matter if they’re receptive inspired us or were a hero, unless they initiate it, I likely never will…  because again, they’re humans just like us.  Not anymore unique or special, they just have a highly visible and very public job that we get to watch and in some ways participate.  So, I just appreciate it for what it is.
    • I'm pleasantly surprised they gave it to Bryce Young over Josh Allen. Finally we're getting some respect. Now I'm just hoping the team follows this up accordingly and doesn't lay another egg.
    • What weird blood red moon has cast its spell?  What’s next, dogs and cats sleeping together? Bonus question:  Did Canales open up his playbook or did Bryce find an extra high gear in his stick shift?
