Starting OL

The line wasn't that bad given all the blitzing the steers were doing backups or not.  This was a top 3 defense in 2020 so of course we struggled with no gameplanning to neutralize the blitz. But I thought the backs picked up blitzes and as the game progressed the guys started sorting things out.  Were there some wiffs and misses? Did we leave points on the board? Yep.  Of course we have lots of work to do but it wasn't as bad as many here are suggesting.

It’s gonna be a night and day difference in an opposing defense’s gameplan with vs. without CMC on the field for us. Defenses are gonna be more reluctant to blitz, they’re gonna invest more coverage to try and contain CMC (opening up opportunities for other receivers), and if they DO wanna blitz, we’re talking about having access to the absolute best safety outlet for a QB under pressure. You can’t overstate the impact of our absolute best player sitting on the bench for the entire game today.

Just now, Mr. Scot said:

I would say Erving looked better than expected tonight.

Still not sure I'm ready to trust him as a full season starter at LT though.

He and Moton were the least of the problems with the line tonight.  Both starting guards and center were not very good, and that's being kind.

Paradis? Wellllll... 😕

I've begged for years to draft a guard, center, and for either Little to work out or to finally find a good LT.

here's hoping Brown answers one of those.

    • Cam was hitting his stride as a QB in 2017/2018.     This is why I think stats like completion percentage are overrated. As long as a QB is clutch and makes the throws to win the game the rest doesn’t really matter. What good is a check down stat padder if they’re a choker.  Until Norv Turner (and briefly Chud) got here we put Cam in high pressure throwing situations all the time. We also ran the ball on first down more than most teams in the NFL in the Ron era. Coupled with shitty WRs, all that is expressed in his stats. I also assume Cam took the ball in his hands on many occasions rather than trust Funchess to catch the ball.    It was also never Cams job to play the game like someone else. His presence on the field dictated the game in a way that is rarely seen.  He showed he could play the dink and dunk game just before TJ Watt. That didn’t suddenly make him better than his earlier seasons. He just got put in a legit under center  passing game again for first time since his rookie year with Chud.    Ron took the quickest path to success and abused the RPO because his ass was about to get fired.    Cam never got the credit for being the cerebral player that he was. I just think when you are legitimately a human Superman, sometimes the best play is having the ball in your hands. He was a better passer than Delhomme was.
    • I don't think Canales has any problem benching Bryce or moving on if Bryce doesn't come out playing like the end of last year.  It's year 3 no more excuses for Bryce
    • Yea Bryce was definitely a top half qb the second half of last season but I'm not sure Canales is 100% sold on him.  Like I've said in another post I think that's part of why we talked to so many South Carolina players in the draft process.  I think they are doing early due diligence on Sellers just in case.
