He’ll make $780,000, less than one-half of 1 percent of the cap. Last season, as a rookie, Charlton had a better gross average, net average and fewer punts returned than the great Johnnie Hekker. I saw Charlton punt during Colts-Panthers practices, and his hang time was insane. When I asked coach Matt Rhule about a big player for his team that no one’s thinking about, he said: “How about our punter? He’s really valuable in how he can reverse the field.” Rhule’s a big special-teams guy, like his idol Bill Parcells, and the placement and height of Charlton’s punts are a boon to Carolina field position.

Yes, but does Charlton throw as pretty of spiral pass and with the accuracy of Johnnie Hekker?  Hekker probably could have been an emergency QB if needed.

I agree, sometimes it's better to lucky than good...and I'm referring to the randomness from which we snagged Charlton off the streets.  I seriously doubt the team had any idea he'd be this effective.

True, the only problem we tend to have with punters is how much we overpay them.  If Charlton keeps this up, I suspect a nice payday is in his future.  I'm not against him getting paid a good salary, just not a Marty Hurney-type gift of a salary.

I (don't kill me) foresee a lot of punts early in the season. Not confident in our O-Line, and so I see a lot of drives stalling deep in our territory. That being the case, you can't overstate the value of a solid punter. Our defense is good enough to slow even the most aggressive offenses, but we just can't afford to give the opposition great field position to start from. Winning the battle of field position could snatch victory from the jaws of defeat a couple times until the offense starts clicking.

Remember how worried we were about punter after Brad Nortman left? Nippleshorts panic traded for Andy Lee and then he got hurt anyways and didn't even play a full season. Palardy took over and showed he was clearly the real deal and held it down as a well above average punter for several years. Then tore his ACL and lost his job to Charlton who is a total boss.

 

Why can't we have the same good fortunes at kicker as we've had at punter?

It's the yin/yang of the Carolina Panthers.  We can't excel at one position without equally sucking at another.  Everything must balance!

      We need a Sam Off Ball Backer to pair with Lloyd. Lloyd is a strong Interior Will especially in Pass Coverage- but that is also Trevin Wallace’s archetype. Need a Rozeboom style run stopper. Rodriguez and Allen fit that

      There aren’t that many ways to screw Day 2 up.  That’d be them making an obvious reach, or selecting at one of the few positions that we are pretty solid at. Because as excited as we are for the growth and improvement this team is showing, it’s still not an overly talented or deep roster. Honestly, there aren’t really many positions I’d feel bad about. Feelings about Bryce aside (because we are not going to select a QB), it’s really RB (bad positional value) and that’s it. I guess OT too since we grabbed Freeling in Round 1.    While not as high on my wish list as other spots, you can justify WR or TE.     Interior offensive lineman who would likely take over an interior spot either this year (at center) or guard (next for cap casualty of Hunt or Lewis)? Fine by me.   Dlineman? Yes, that’s a highly rotational position and we have zero quality depth.    ILB? Yep, could stand for an upgrade over Wallace.    EDGE? Absolutely wouldn’t hate another option to spell Phillips, Scourton, and Princely.    FS?  Would love to add better coverage skill set to the backend of the defense. Moehrig and Ransom are great in run support but not as good deep. Adding a more traditional FS would allow us to mix and match/run some 3 safety sub packages and or a big nickel type look with a SS down near the line for better run support in possible pass downs.    CB? Could stand to get better at nickel.
